End of all remaining Covid restrictions in England

@johncrossley - that was my understanding of the original intent as well. @Darandio - don't go there. @yorkie - thank you for the revision. It was the original wording that was flawed, not my understanding.

End of all remaining Covid restrictions in England

Indeed. Somone who criticises others for being cold hearted and writes "your existence is not appealing to many of us" needs to take a log, hard look at himself.

    [Trivia] I wonder if...

I wonder if SWR will ever paint paint all their rolling stock in the new pale blue colour scheme. I'm sure one of their trains at Clapham Junction today was a mixture of THREE colour schemes.

    Most painful 'minor' injury/injuries?

For me, bruised ribs. For weeks any sudden movement, like going over a speed bump or shifting in my chair, was agonising. But that's not in the same league as what happened to my brother: cactus needles in his eye - he fainted because of the pain. Does that count as a minor injury? He made a...

Minor things on trains which irritate you

Interesting. GWR used 180's for a while and they rattled something rotten. I much preferred the 125's. They didn't keep the 180's for long - maybe others felt the same way.

China vs Taiwan and other potential invasions/conflicts of concern (previously included Russia & Ukraine)

I am reminded of a scene in the 1970 movie of the battle of Waterloo which goes something like this: British officer: Sir, Napoleon has just ridden into range of our guns. Pemission to take a shot? Wellington: Certainly not. Armies have much better things to do than fire on generals.

    Covid Memorials

And history.com says 'Historians now believe that the fatal severity of the Spanish flu’s “second wave” was caused by a mutated virus spread by wartime troop movements.' https://www.history.com/.amp/news/spanish-flu-second-wave-resurgence

    Vaccine Progress, Approval, and Deployment

Fascinating story here about how Cuba, despite being an economic basket case, developed its own vaccines and has inoculated 90% of the population. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/05/cuba-coronavirus-covid-vaccines-success-story The organisation which succeeded where the likes of...

    Covid Memorials

The home of Dr. Edward Jenner, father of vaccination, is a museum. They are inviting people to contribute to their Covid 19 diary. https://jennermuseum.com/ Your question reminded me of the museum's existence, so thank you for posing it. I made a modest contribution to their running costs.

    Covid Memorials

Apparently there is no memorial to the estimated 228,000 victims of Spanish Influenza in the UK. Across the world a handful of memorials and plaques exist, very few of them contemporaneous. It seems societies just wanted to put the ghastliness behind them, or focussed on remembering the victims...

    Windows or Chromebook?

100% this, but IMHO chromebooks have lost their way. It used to be possible to buy a budget chromebook with a decent IPS screen - not any more. And despite having 4Mb of memory, my latest chromebook hangs more frequently than older chromebooks with just 2Mb. There's no longer any incentive for...

    Vaccine Progress, Approval, and Deployment

I've had 2 AZ's and a Moderna booster. One of the side-effects of C19 is tinnitus - ringing in the ears. Having had tinnitus before, I'm VERY keen to avoid a rerun, so I'll take any booster that's offered.

    WB Yeats's The Second Coming

Written in the midst of the 1918/19 Spanish Flu pandemic, eerily resonant today so I thought I'd share it. If this is the wrong forum, or otherwise inappropriate, please delete :-) It's out of copyright. Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things...

    Bizarre conversations you have overheard

Another one, on a train near Barnes heading towards Clapham Junction: a group of young men, presumably off-duty police officers, were discussing in loud voices the levels of training and response times of the armed guards at Buckingham Palace. I think they were trying to impress the young ladies...

    Bizarre conversations you have overheard

Years ago on a Bristol bus, a conversation between an old man an old lady... Her: Used to be much hotter than now in the old days. Him: Arrr, much hotter. Her: You couldn't even have a sheet on top of you in bed. Him: It's all they rockets they've been launching, innit?

Guardian article: SWR leaves passengers stranded

Or maybe she's more motivated. More than once I've seen a BTL comment in response to articles by her or her consumer affairs colleagues on the lines of 'Is that all?'

Guardian article: SWR leaves passengers stranded

Anna Timms normally polishes off these case studies in 4 or 5 paragraphs. This one is 18 paragraphs long.
