Pricing of out of court settlements and costs involved in persuing fare evasion cases

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/17-year-old-with-a-childs-ticket-ridiculous-fine.260551/ Investigating fare evasion, both on the network and in the back office will cost a lot of money. Surely those caught should bear those costs, rather than passengers who pay...

7 Extra Voyagers for Cross Country

According to Modern Railways, the contract announced today for Cross Country includes an additional 7 Voyagers once released by Avanti WC, to replace the capacity lost by the withdrawal of the HSTs. So for a service that has been in dire need of additional rolling stock for many years, the best...

    Speed through gatelines

Having had to spend a few minutes at a gateline waiting for my better half it seemed to me that those using a phone to gain access, either by simply tapping, or by presenting a QR code, take longer on average than those simply tapping with a bank card or Oyster, or feeding in a card ticket. Has...

Sir Nigel Gresley failure at Shrewsbury

Sir Nigel failed to reappear for this afternoon’s return trip to Bristol on the Saphos Welsh Marches Express. Crew said something about the brake blocks, but was all a bit vague. I have to say, I don’t think I heard one apology from any of the onboard team for us not having steam for the...

Pilning station should be brought back to life

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/portway-park-ride-opening-date.249257/ If there is any money to throw around at the Avonmouth area I would rather it spent bringing Pilning back to life. It’s walking distance from the massive distribution site that has grown up...

South & East Rail Group Notes on Meeting with "DfT/Treasury Friends"

From Twitter. I won't pass any comment on any of the individual points made, but it's a very depressing picture. https://twitter.com/SouthEastRailGp

Good news for Cornish services, but cringey PR

Three new sidings to be built at Penzance to stable 9 car IETs. Good news, but am I the only one to cringe at the way NR's media team try to explain things in a way that you might at an infants school. I would have thought the general public would have a good idea what a railway siding is...

Vivarail chosen for GWR fast charging trial.

Press release text below. https://news.gwr.com/news/gwr-fast-charging-trial-brings-regular-battery-only-rail-services-a-step-closer I've thought for a while that battery trains could be used on most of the West Country branch lines that simply shuttle back and fore.

    Walsall to Brownhills

I notice that Railway Paths is preparing to sell off the former trackbed between Walsall and Brownhills. I'm not that familiar with the area, but given the amount of built up area this passes near to, is there any possibility of it being restored to rail use (or at least protected against...

What stock will Scotrail be using on the Levenmouth line when it reopens?

With the Levenmouth line due to open in a couple of years and partial electrification scheduled for the Borders and Fife Circle lines, is there any information yet as to what stock will operate these services? Given the lead times for procurement of new stock (or even conversion of existing...

How long should customers retain their ticket for, after they have alighted from the train?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/train-fine-straight-to-court.206923/ I've certainly seen my 20 year old son go to leave his ticket on the train when alighting at our unstaffed station, on the assumption that the journey is over and there will be nobody there to...

Why have TPE extended some trains beyond Newcastle to Edinburgh?

I do question why TP needed to extend to Edinburgh other than as a rather massive ORCATS raid. Apart from Liverpool all the major cities served already have direct services to the city, with Manchester via the West Coast route being noticeably quicker than via the East Coast.
