Avanti detour - via Earlstown, Manchester and Bolton

So was that the 9P77 to Blackpool North that I saw going over Sackville Street at about 5.05pm tonight? Not much fun for the passengers but at least a bit of variety for us pedestrians!

Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway - access to Cheltenham?

I have a feeling the thread title may have caused some unwarranted excitement... :D

Should certain light rail lines be converted back to heavy rail?

Totally agree. I think the Sheffield system is much better with a centre car all-seater and all the prams, wheelchair, cycles etc in the two end cars. Certainly the seats the M5000's do have are very unpleasant for the longer routes (if you're 'lucky' enough to get one)!

DfT Plan to Demolish Disused Bridges and Tunnels

Ah! Many thanks fgwrich. The angle I was viewing at made it look like a complete infill.

DfT Plan to Demolish Disused Bridges and Tunnels

Apologies if I've missed mention of this elsewhere but I notice that the Clifton Road bridge over the old GC Ruddington Station site appears to have suffered a similar fate to the Musgrave Lane bridge (at least it looks that way on Google maps). As it's a larger road closer to built-up areas I'm...

    Eden Valley Railway - Appleby?

That's excellent news (but I really must learn to read threads before posting - I've just seen the picture in post 17)! Let's just hope it's still in a reasonable condition and can be restored. It's a beautiful old building.

    Eden Valley Railway - Appleby?

Had a quick look on Google maps. Is the original station building still there? There's something there that looks suspiciously like it.

Hello again Matt, My apologies for the above. Original issue seems to have cleared. Not sure if this was a site issue or just local to me at the time - but am stymied by character limit again. Original problem - a couple of images (one in the Sheffield derailment thread, one in the TfW 769...

    GCR Bridge Project

A very valid point. And your updates are always much appreciated Phil :)

    GCR Bridge Project

Absolutely, couldn't agree more. Well done to all involved and I really hope they can keep up the momentum. I hate to be picky but I do wonder how much more could be achieved though if they'd only improve their PR a bit! Updates about the railway in general are a bit thin on the ground. I think...

Could the Okehampton Line reopen to passengers?

Apologies for being a bit behind the times but I've only just caught up with this one! I was just curious because the article seems a little more thorough (certainly longer) than the usual local press efforts. Do we know Mr Partridge? He certainly gives this forum a mention.

Released Capacity In Manchester As A Result Of Tram-Train Introduction

And not just time either! The seating is completely unsuitable for that sort of distance. If TfGM are wanting to increase service distances they really should be looking at seating that doesn't induce DVT!!!

Why do Wikipedia articles refer to UK rolling stock as "British Rail"?

Many locomotive and unit types are used by more than one TOC and even owned by more than one leasing company. Unless you're familiar with the manufacturer, 'British Rail' is probably the most convenient - and most understood - name to use?

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Just to add to Jonesy3001's photo, there's now an information board on the small traffic island just out of shot to the left. This suggests that there will be two, extended closures of Queens Road between May and August next year. I would assume this will be for the installation of the new bridges.

A link to the relevant planning permission was included in post 2727. Hope that helps.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Apologies if I've missed it from somewhere further up-thread but would anyone know if there's an approximate schedule for the Miles Platting Junction work? Normally I'd be passing the corner of Oldham Road and Queens Road every weekday but I'm still on furlough and have been since April so a bit...

Is the chord that links HS1 towards Waterloo still in use?

Not sure how to access the co-ordinates but, on Google maps, I think we're talking about the junction just next to postcode DA13 9PN?

3 Spies Junction? Coventry - Nuneaton Line

Many thanks for that John! You know, in all that time I never realised there was a second. It was the fixed-height one that was such a prominent landmark and the one I'll always remember.

3 Spies Junction? Coventry - Nuneaton Line

Apologies to the mods if this is wandering off-topic slightly but the temptation for a wallow in nostalgia was too great :D. That view of what looks like a gasometer (although I was never entirely sure what it actually was) was a regular part of my childhood as we used to use the Lythalls Lane -...
