What was the last change you were genuinely excited about?

Raising the speed limit on the Carstairs south to east curve.

Thanks for all the suggestions which I will follow up.

    Five seats together on LNER

Thanks for the prompt response. We have already booked and been allocated three seats in coach B and two in coach J. I have contacted customer services but no response yet. I did a trial booking of five to Inverness and was allocated a table and a seat nearby but I can’t find this on the seat...

    Five seats together on LNER

I hope this is the most appropriate forum for my query. We are a family of five, four adults and one child travelling north from Kings Cross on a through train to Inverness in a month or so. Two of the adults and the child will alight at Waverley, the other adults will travel through to...

Alighting from a rail replacement bus short of its destination.

My wife and I often travel by train from Manchester to Galashiels, on our way to visit family in Peebles. The next time we do this, on Sunday 2 April, it will involve a rail replacement bus from Carlisle to Edinburgh, which is likely to pass near to Peebles. Would we be permitted to alight at...

    Barbers in railway stations

My mother had two uncles, brothers, who were both barbers with premises "in Liverpool Street" in the late 1950s though I don't know whether that meant the station or the roadway outside.

Trivia: Station, junction, signalbox and level crossing names which could be personal names.

There is said to have been a real Gwyddelan "the little Irishman" after whom Dolwyddelan is named.

Split footbridges for lifts vs. stairs (Chester and Lancaster)

Llandudno Junction has a stairs/lifts split footbridge with, I think, no access from one to the other except at the not much used Platform 4 end. If I remember rightly there always were lifts, for parcels &c. Lifts for public use are a fairly recent thing.

    TransPennine Express Delay-Repay

I have already done so. All I received was a re-iteration of the original rejection.

    TransPennine Express Delay-Repay

About once a month my wife and travel from Manchester where we live to Edinburgh to visit family. Not wanting the hassle of changing trains we book with TransPennine to travel on their through trains, stipulating the time of train on which we intend to travel. When we made this trip in January...

    Stations with gardens

The website of the Friends of Leamington Spa Station has a page devoted to the gardens, though no recent updates as far as I can tell.

    Stations with gardens

The Royal Horticultural Society's "It's Your Neighbourhood" campaign has a section covering stations. The list of awards, which includes 17 stations, in the North West (of England) can be found on the North West in Bloom website. The campaign is organised on a regional basis - a list and links...

Once the next station where unfortunately nothing remains of railway interest but a very intriguing name: Joppa

Trivia - stations with too many platforms

"Stations with too few/too many platforms" was a forum topic in 2014, when I posted this: I have never been sure where to ask this question but this thread seems kind of appropriate: why do [some] continental stations have so many more platforms and other infrastructure? For example, I...

Cambrian Storm Damage / Conwy Valley Flooding 02/20

Earlier this week what looked like lengths of old rail were being dumped on the site of the goods yard at Roman Bridge; I think this may have been the purpose of the trips by on-track vehicles I mentioned in posts 204 and 208. Presumably new track, or at least new rail, is being provided as...

On-track machine - sorry I am not familiar with the terminology.

Cambrian Storm Damage / Conwy Valley Flooding 02/20

At least three round trips by an engineers vehicle through Dolwyddelan today. Maybe it a regular occurrence but I haven't seen anything like this recently.
