    Why did we need HS1?

Urban regeneration is tricky to get right - on one hand there are probably more jobs in the area than in the 1990s but parts of KX do feel very sterile and corporate now. The area around Waterloo feels like it's going the same way. 1713938855 It's definitely helped to reboot the Kent seaside...

A question about commuting to vs living in London.

Parking is generally easy in London suburbs because not everyone has a car. Most areas near stations will be resident permit only which might cost £30-60 a year.

Trip Report - Chislehurst to Ashford via Maidstone and Ashford to Tonbridge - 2024/04/15

Nice shot - I've been under that blue bridge 100s of times but never seen it from the top!

    Chesham Underground permanent closure?

In the last few decades stations have only closed on the TfL network if there has been some sort of replacement, for example Silvertown and North Woolwich stations were 'replaced' by DLR stations.

Keir Starmer and the Labour Party

I thought that was the definition of the Red Wall, that those were long standing Labour seats until 2019.

A Cambridge tube coach, is there a case for it?

Does Cambridge also have more inbound commuting from places like Royston and Ely which help to sustain the high level of service?

    Will we see motorail return?

The South of France is a wide area though - it doesn't have one station which would serve the whole market.

Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party.

The MRP is interesting but really you can see the writing on the wall from the Redfield & Wilton polling of the "Red Wall" seats. In 2019 these 30-40 seats got the Tory majority over the line to 359 seats (326 being the threshold for a majority). In the 2019 election the Tories won these seats...

    Will we see motorail return?

Am I right that the original Motorail only operated from station A to station B or did they do intermediate stops like a normal train?

Which specific train journey is the most profitable in the UK?

To put it into context, if you travelled from Stratford to Ealing Broadway in 2020 you'd most likely use the slow Central line. Now you'd use the Elizabeth line (which has higher costs) and save half the time but you're not paying a premium for it.

    East Anglia planned pylons

Even if there was it would be very hard to determine as everyone lives near electricity cables in their home or workplace.

Rerouting all Southeastern Mainline services into Victoria (and via Crystal Palace?) or Waterloo - could it work?

Nobody wants to go to Victoria. If it didn't exist now nobody would suggest building a station there.

Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party.

I don't think Sunak is hugely popular but they really tanked in the polls during the Liz Truss "era" and haven't recovered from that. So in a way the party leader from now to the election isn't a critical factor.

    Can Revenue override a Guard

I had the same situation on Southeastern and the guard said no which is entirely their call. Went for a pint instead :)

Speeding up slow journeys between London boroughs

It's a carrot and stick thing too relative to driving. If you drive from Carshalton to Zone 1 it's going to be slow and parking will be expensive, so the train wins for most people. Carshalton to Wandsworth is an easier drive and parking will be cheaper or free.

    Gravesend Tilbury Ferry

I've used it a few times with my bike. My impression is while it serves a few different niche markets well, they're all quite price sensitive so if the fare was say £10 it would price most users off. It has two crew members and runs roughly half hourly. There was previously talk of Thames...
