TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Thankyou. I wondered if that would happen !. I wonder if 12802 is visible ?. (I expect many do).

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Are all the (ex)TPE Mk5s now at Longsight and Long Marston (*) ?. Or does Gascoigne Wood, Crewe etc still host any ?. * = I think 12802 is still hiding at CAF Newport ?.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

I have seen it before when too much productivity is required then things start to go wrong. As a person on the coal face there is a limit to how much you can complain. I can remember being told it is best to shut up and keep working while you have a job. I think there was quite a large number...

Collision of cargo ship with, and collapse of, Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore (26/03)

+ If it was like the Dartford Crossing or indeed the Severn Crossing with the toll booths all on one side then there would have been a solid queue of vehicles on one carriageway of the bridge if the collision had happened during peak traffic hours.

DfT press release on Northern Powerhouse Rail

My bold I am not sure but possibly Exeter does not generate much in the way of employment so people are more likely to head to London. Manchester is bigger but more likely to have employment within it so people are less likely to look to London for employment. Also the demographic in Devon and...

DfT press release on Northern Powerhouse Rail

I reckon a frequency uplift brings more passengers BUT not much use if the railways cannot cater for them. The limits are crew (drivers) and paths.

Greater Anglia Bombardier Aventras (Class 720): Technical discussion and introduction

Never mind, you are going to have to wait an absolute age for the last 720s to enter service. Some early built 720s risk staying as Chrismass trees until pre Covid levels of passengers are long ago exceeded. Look at how it is only now that the last 710 is expected into service soon. I try not to...

DfT press release on Northern Powerhouse Rail

I would have thought filling a platform once an hour is operationally more efficient then pathing two trains every thirty minutes onto the same platform. By going half hourly you are doubling the use of a platform that has to be shared with other services.

Collision of cargo ship with, and collapse of, Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore (26/03)

True enough. If the traffic had been really heavy then the bridge would have been supplemented. Like the Fourth river road crossings (in the UK) where the older one is wearing out and the newer one had to be built to relieve the older one. I have wondered how the Fourth river rail bridge...

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

I think the 384 cars would have given Derby more chance of continuity. Not saying the Aventra platform would have been in production longer. But it would likely have been only a meagre proportion of the 384. To be attractive the timescales required by the TOCs wanting DMUs would have to have...

Greater Anglia Bombardier Aventras (Class 720): Technical discussion and introduction

I thought that 720137 was out a while ago ?. EDIT Only seen 720137 on test :- That was 14/02.2024.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

Well those 384 cars would be 96 x 4-car units, 76.8 x 5-car units or 128 x 3-car units. Or combinations thereof. That would be a decent order. Seeing as the MD of Derby is boasting that 2,651 coaches were built over ten years then 384 cars is almost 18 months work. On the other hand not all the...

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

I agree. Given we now know production at Derby has completed (even if the units themselves are far from complete !). The only work left for Derby would be the "finishing" normally being done to new units at Worksop, Willesden and Ilford. There is the whole fleet of 730/2s that are presumably...

Collision of cargo ship with, and collapse of, Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore (26/03)

On timing I can imagine it taking the best part of a week to bring in and assemble a floating crane and large barge. Then maybe a day to lift each section of truss out. How large a section of truss depends on its weight and any structural integrity left in the truss !. This might be the stage...

    What does this sign mean?

Yes. It does look like a slightly opened pull down window.

    What does this sign mean?

+ Using a small screen perhaps ?. As for the sign - no its not clear. I sat in first class on quite a few journeys puzzling the purpose of that sign. It did not appear like a hand over the top of a door - but then I cannot think of a time I have put my hand on the top of a door except when...

Collision of cargo ship with, and collapse of, Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore (26/03)

That video looks to show the pair of concrete A pillers sticking up above the water being moved away from under the steel it is meant to support. Moved away in the same direction of travel as the ship. I cannot tell whether the strike was above the water surface or below. But it looks like the...

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

Actually you've just triggered a (the) brain cell, perhaps more significantly, the 7-car and 9-car 345s. I seem to recall the software was very different. Possibly call them the 345 7-car project and the 345 lengthening project.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

I am confused. What are the "SIX Aventra projects" ?. I can only think of classes 345, 701, 710, 720 and 730. Wikepedia could not help me except to say Aventras replaced 172s !. Does "project" mean something else. I am trying not to be negative here.
