    London to Edinburgh/Glasgow Question

Yes there's not really the capacity for additonal services south of Milton Keynes even if HS2 makes it Crewe, there still is only planned to be one train per hour suggesting the capacity issues are north of Crewe too. Edinburgh will probably always have more services than Glasgow but Edinburgh...

    London to Edinburgh/Glasgow Question

Like most services that run on busy GB lines, I don't think its demand for rail that limits services. There's millions of flights from the Central belt to London and its hard to believe that at least some of that demand couldn't be attracted to rail with more services. A quick glance at...

As it stands, is it worth ordering HS2 stock?

I'd question if they're even quicker to Manchester via Crewe. I worked out that a train from Handsacre without tilt would lose a maximum of 2 minutes via Crewe. Considering HS2 trains will accelerate quicker than pendos, I'd be surprised if they were timed for longer.

    Lincolnshire OAO?

I don't think looking at existing figures is neccesarily misleading. Its likely that they're still relatively proportionate. Growing up in Grimsby, I know that a lot of people drove to Newark to catch London trains. I think another problem with Skegness/Boston to London is that even with a...

    Lincolnshire OAO?

The population of North Lincolnshire is 330k. The population of Hull 2011 travel to work area including up to Driffield,Market Weighton, Hornsea, Goole and Howden is 520k. Add Bridlington and Selby and the surronding areas and you're up to around 600k. 1712520295 This is the main issue which is...

    Lincolnshire OAO?

The data is Lennon ticket data. It'll be an underestimate, as it won't include split ticketing occurring at Doncaster. Still it's not going to be huge numbers of people. It certainly could be a viable proposition though if only for a couple of services in each direction per day.

    Lincolnshire OAO?

Grimsby is one of the biggest markets, not served directly on the ECML, with around 17k one way journeys. Only Huddersfield is higher with 18k journeys. Cleethorpes has around 6.5k one way journeys to London, Barnetby and Market Rasen add another couple of thousand trips so there's clearly a...

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram pledges to bring "trackless trams" to Liverpool Airport, among other places

I pretty much agree with all of that. Some sort of alternative transport would be needed that provided more frequent stops for people who people with mobility issues. That could either be a fixed route service with smaller vehicles or a door to door services. At the moment bus tries to be...

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram pledges to bring "trackless trams" to Liverpool Airport, among other places

While the use of the phrase 'trackless tram' is slightly annoying, I think this a good idea. BRT isn't as good as tram but it has a lot of the advantages of trams including less frequent stops with better facilities, off board payment, segregation from traffic, and multiple doors on vehicles...

DfT press release on Northern Powerhouse Rail

To be fair I was referring to the Liverpool Manchester section which has been priced at £12bn. Whether or not it can be done in that cost is another thing entirely. A few billion a year is nothing to the government. Its a very visible sign of leveling up without having to deal with the more...

DfT press release on Northern Powerhouse Rail

Not sure on the exact nature or scale of the work but work on NPR has been going on for years. I believe there was business case completed just before the government decides to rip up HS2 and send everybody back to the drawing board....

DfT press release on Northern Powerhouse Rail

Of course there's demand. It's not like Manchester's suburbs are significantly different to Liverpool's and yet suburban rail stations record significantly better usage in Manchester than Liverpool. Why? The far lower frequency on Manchester's railways. How many stations have more than 2 trains...

DfT press release on Northern Powerhouse Rail

But a lot of that is already happening or planned as well as NPR. NPR isn't just about the transpennine route either, it's about freeing up more capacity in Manchester for more frequent local trains. It relieves a number of bottlenecks in Central Manchester. Its vital to have more frequent...

Heysham Port line new stations/improvement potential

In my previous post I stated that Lancaster would continue to get Euston services either terminating at Lancaster as proposed by HS2, continuing to Windermere or carrying on up the WCML. HS2 Glasgow/Edinburgh services weren't proposed to call at Lancaster anyway. Moving those services on to a...

Heysham Port line new stations/improvement potential

Yes it would be an expensive route but the traffic is far more likely to justify an intervention that provides speed and frequency benefits to intercity trains. 3 tracking all the way to Lancaster is going to cost £100s million for one extra service from Morecambe to Lancaster. It also leaves...

Heysham Port line new stations/improvement potential

Realistically trams aren't suitable for Lancaster. Converting the Morecambe route would make a lot of sense in many ways if there is no need for nuclear trains. It would allow: Dual track operation with simplified signalling Easy extensions to Heysham and Morecambe seafront More stations in the...

    HS2 Old Oak Common

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of Plymouth to Manchester journeys did switch to going via OOC as things stand. It'd almost certainly be quicker than changing at Birmingham based on current timetable. Personally I quite like the change on such a long journey so I generally choose via London...

'Higher Speed' Lines by bypassing slow sections with new track

I get your point that lengthening trains is more cost effective, but the impact of frequency shouldn't be underestimated. On shorter journeys it really one of the most important, if not the most important factor. Lincoln to Nottingham is a relatively short journey so frequency would definitely...

Strensall station should've been built, not Haxby

Agree with all this. The 2011 census also had a decent number of commuters travelling to Leeds from the area. A Haxby Station would be make this far quicker particularly if direct trains are provided. York Central, which is finally moving forward, is another potential destination for rail...

'Higher Speed' Lines by bypassing slow sections with new track

If the HS2 eastern leg isn't built then my number 1 high speed bypass would be Doncaster. Probably leaving the ECML somewhere around Bawtry and joining back up at Temple Hirst. Doncaster is a serious mess of conflicts that will likely cost billions to solve anyway. A bypass would largely solve...
