    Steam shed websites

I have long enjoyed these websites: 8dassociation.org 8erailwayassociation.org.uk Prestonstation.org.uk These sites are based around the sheds at Widnes, Northwich and Lostock Hall. Are there any other sites reflecting other sheds?

Standard 5s at Croes Newydd, Wrexham

According to Hugh Longworth's "Allocatio Histories" in summer '65 five Standard 5s were transferred from Nuneaton to Croes Newydd (together with one from Shrewsbury). Most were transferred away by Spring '66. Does anyone know what they were used for? Bit of a long shot!

Black 5s stored at Chester Midland shed

Bit of a long shot but this has been bugging me for months. In 1966 (or possibly early '67) there were two ex-works Black 5s stored next to the Crewe lines at 6A. They were numbered 44xxx and were anagrams. Which ones were they, can anyone set my mind to rest?

    Last steam on the Wirral

On the 27th April 1968 I noted 45156 on an Inspection Saloon at Bidston. Has anyone noted any steam on the Wirral after this date?

    Water cranes Firenze (Florence) SMN

Taking a train into Firenze at the weeekend I was surprised to see a water crane at the remains of the depot just outside SMN station. I was astonished to see another one at a platform end, I think platform 6. I tried to photograph them from our return train but was thwarted by other...

Llandudno - Manchester Club train December 1966

Although Llandudno Jct MPD closed to steam in October 1966 the above train (07.30 off Llandudno, I think) was frequently steam right to the end of the year (for example I had a Black 5 on the 28th). Does anyone know the provision and servicing arrangements involved? If the coastbound train was...

    Class 92s near Preston

I hear that yesterday (Wednesday) double-headed 92s went north near Preston with a short rake of blood and custard stock and later appeared southbound now topping and tailing. They were shortly followed by a WCR 47/57. Don't know what the times were. Anyone know what these workings were?

    Peaks D1-10 on passenger

Does anyone know when the original Peaks ceased to be routinely rostered to passenger trains. Amazingly my wife tells me she saw D4 on the Settle & Carlisle (God only knows when!) on an express but I only saw them on mineral trains in the Derby/Stoke areas. What routes did they cover for pass?

How long would the lights stay on?

I think there are a few people from the power industry on this forum so maybe they could give a clue about something I have often wondered. Just suppose that everyone in the country dropped dead at midday today - how long would the National Grid supply electricity?

Steam in the Sheffield area in 1967.

I have heard that the 7.06 train from Sheffield to Leeds was steam hauled "Late into 1967". I had not heard of this before. Does anyone know when this finished? Does anyone know what the rest of the diagram entailed? What other steam passenger was there in what is now South Yorkshire in...

Class 20 on A630 nr Sheffield

Yesterday afternoon on the A630 (Sheffield Parkway) I caught a glimpse of what I think is was a Class 20 on a lorry,Ii assume heading for the M1. It was white with a large "3" on the cabside. Anyone know what this move was?

Max speed of diesel locos on short passenger trains

I have it in my head that some diesels had a lower speed limit if they were hauling a short ( 4 coach?) passenger train. Is my mind playing tricks on me?

    A strange Birkenhead - Shrewsbury working c1969

In " Memories of Bank Hall, Birkenhead and Beyond" by Mal Pratt, I came across this passage. "On August 20th 1968 booking on was at 21.15 then light diesels to Ellesmere Port using Type 2's 7627 & 7554 working to Healey Mills via Rochdale, then home passenger booking off at 10.15. I finally...

    Greaves Wood, Gathurst nr Wigan

On Sunday morning I was perusing a Wigan street map (I imagine many of you would also be doing this). This was the 1997 edition and I noticed that it showed an extensive network of railway lines in the area around Greaves Wood across the river and canal from Gathurst station. There are...

Just idly wondering, do railwaymen still call Shrewsbury "Salop"?

    Co-operation between TOCs.

Is co-operation forbidden? If one TOC ran all trains between A and B and another all between B and C would it be permitted to run trains from A to C with the TOCs providing alternate trains?

Trays of stones in the four foot at Newport

Haven't been there for about 25 years but I recall that at Newport station at least some of the roads had trays of stones in the four foot. Anyone know the story of these?
