A freight train has now derailed at the location of these break-ins in LA. I wonder if all the rubbish laying about had something to do with it or maybe an intentional act?

Might be straight but the track appears to rise and dip in the distance. That with heat haze is probably enough to obscure the distance at least partially. ATC here for anyone interested:

Proceed on Sight Authority. If there is a problem with the signalling, instead of the usual method of bringing the train to a stand, communicating with the signaller and then moving again, the driver can just keep going at caution if the PoSA is flashing. Saves time and thus saves money.

You are right. Petrol can easily be ignited from a spark hence we have spark plugs or similar in petrol cars. Diesel needs to either being heated prior, be under great pressure, or aerosolized to get ignition.

Well that depends on the brake and how its being used. The brake will release with the engine running if the brake pipe pressure reaches or exceeds the brake pressure release point which for our trains over here is 5 bar. Anything below 5 bar will cause the brake to apply at a force that...

"DSD" refers to the "Drivers Safety Device". Its a handle or pedal that needs to be continually depressed by the driver if the reverser handle is in either forward or reverse. If the driver takes his foot off the pedal (or hand off the handle) for more than a few seconds the brakes apply...
