Merseyrail legacy fleet updates (Class 507/508)

Can you please explain what all these abbreviations/codes mean? Please edit your post to make it clear as it makes it hard for some to understand what you are talking about.

    Stopping at stations

I don’t know if it’s still the case but when I lived in Birmingham 10-15 years ago, the Cross-City line platforms had a green line painted on the platform floor which indicated to the guard the train was correctly platformed, thus meaning that a check of the train did not have to take place...

    iPhone touchscreens on Class 800/801

I thought they had fixed this issue as I certainly didn’t experience it last time I went to York, but my other half is on an 800 with LNER this evening and reports his phone is totally unusable with phantom touch screen presses and so on. Does it only apply to the bi-mode units when on...

Train Sim V Reality: Cab lighting in tunnels/darkness

I worked with a driver once who decreed that any fellow who did the following was strange: - drove with the cab light on - wore their hi vi everywhere, even when not on the track or in the depot - drove whilst standing up - carried two bags We had a couple who did any three of the above but...

Class 345s and automated "auto reverse": Problems with it and whether it was a good idea to begin with

Could they not as an alternative have the trains be double-ended, ie. one driver gets on in the rear (east end) cab at Paddington, sits in the cab and waits for it to be fully berthed in the siding, and then when it is, they key in and take over the cab ready for its eastbound trip. When the...

When do Sheffield TramTrains need TOPS codes to use Network Rail but LU do not?

The difference being, that on Network Rail, overlaps are typically fixed length. Whereas on London Underground, the overlaps are variable, and take into account train speeds, braking capacity, and so on. TPWS does not claim to, and will not, in all cases cause a correctly functioning train being...

When do Sheffield TramTrains need TOPS codes to use Network Rail but LU do not?

AIUI, TPWS is not guaranteed to prevent a functioning train being driven at the right speed from passing a signal and prevent it from potentially colliding with another train.

    LNER Azuma (Class 800/801)

No idea, it isn't clear whether the risk is of traction current causing issues for someone, or whether it is the train's internal "hotel" power.

    LNER Azuma (Class 800/801)

Emergency services and staff have been advised not to go underneath the train (for example to rescue a person that has been hit or to recover lost property) until it has been confirmed by Hitachi that it has been "electrically isolated." Not sure if this just requires the pantographs to be...

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

Yes, there seems to be three things by the door. The signage for the red alarm just implies that it will stop the train, whereas on other modern stock the red alarm signage usually implies that operating it will let you communicate with the driver. Signage for the green SOS button on this new...

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before, except on some trains in the toilets and (possibly) in the Wheelchair areas. Do you have any examples? I don’t ever remember seeing one in green either, this stock still has the emergency door opening handle in green as is usual for modern stock.

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

I’ve noticed in some of the photos from the new trains that there seems to be a new, green button, marked SOS near the doors which the signage implies allows you to talk to a member of train crew. Below this is a red button that says Alarm and the signage implies that it will stop the train...

    GWR Class 800

I didn’t even know they had USBs! Where are they? I could only see two normal three pin sockets underneath the seat.

I only use the official chargers & it only happens on this train.

    GWR Class 800

Sorry to bring up an old point but I’m on one of their new trains now and I’m getting the same issue when charging my iPhone, it does the same on my new XR, my work phone which is a 7 Plus also has the same issue, whereby it’s as if random things are being pressed on the screen, it’s impossible...

Toilet smells on trains Virgin/Cross country

Most units have retention tanks and do not smell as bad as Voyagers and Pendolinos.

    Opening closing doors

Sorry I was more trying to imply that the auto close feature is typically at the majority of stations, and not just those at the ends of the line as asked by the person in the post that I quoted.

    Opening closing doors

It’s used at most stations as a standard setting (of course at most stations the train probably/hopefully won’t be stationary long enough for it to be noticed) there are however stations such as Baker St where the train operators are instructed to disable it to mitigate against platform train...
