The Scillonian Ferry (Penzance - Hugh Town)

Been a few times over the years. Helicopter is a must. That too was slick and well organised. Always turn up early as there is the probability that you will fly early. One negative factor though is Never park your car near a lamp standard, as after 2 weeks of gulls dropping deposits it sets solid.

How did you get around London before the M25 opened?

Back in 1979 I was driving from Chatham to Liverpool every weekend for 6 months,, normally leaving about 15.00. I found the easiest route on Friday afternoons was to take the A2 straight into London, pick up the inner circular. Then take the A501 , A1 through Archway to the M1.

    Consecutive A roads

This struck me today. What is the highest number of consecutively numbered roads I can travel on in the UK in one journey? Without a break in the sequence. e.g A1-A2-A3 etc, but I don't think that example will be possible though. A better one would be A10 - A11 - A12 again that might not be...

    London's Ringways Plan

I wonder if this scheme is a development of the plan drawn up in the "County of London Plan" dated 1943?

What did your driving test involve?

Took my test in 1975 on the last day of hand signals. I had failed first test due to not making normal progress. 2nd test went ok, very erratic reverse round a corner, brake jammed on at the hill start, but examiner said I exhibited confidence and passed e me. Southport was another problem...

Woolwich Ferry - the end of an era

I believe that one of the reasons for the ferry being retained was for dangerous loads banned in the tunnels. Posssibly also on the bridges. What is the route for these loads now?

    Kemble Airfield Scrap aircraft photo's - 5th January 2016

Its a while back but the only time I was at Kemble the Red Arrows were based there back in 1979. We, a Royal Engineer unit, had the task of servicing the Arrester gear on the runways. I remember the Base commander getting very shirty about us being allowed to drive on his base, especially when...

    Low Flying planes

We get Choppers of all types especially Military flying past us often at about 250 - 300ft. They tend to use the York ring road as a navigation guide and follow it and the A59 / A1 enroute to Dishforth or elsewhere. Night time has brought about the sight of a chopper flying along and stopping at...

Favourite Current or Former Passenger ship operating in the UK

Brittany I would agree are pretty good. Lot better than Townsend Toreson ever were. Worst regular Ferry service was on Sir Lancelot from Marchwood to Antwerp. I know its not UK but. Best Ferry though was the "Chi Chimaun" in Canada between Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin...

Scheduled helicopter flights to Scilly Isles axed.

I got that impression of Penzance 3 years ago when I used the helicopter service. We thought that Penzance was a dump and thankfully we were just passing through. Unlike when I stayed there frequently as a kid with relatives in the town back in the 60s. What this will do to the local island...
