I encountered the same problem , if I use my iPhone I cannot choose my seat it says they are unavailable when the seat picker shows they clearly are available , but if I use my PC and go onto the Avanti website I can swap seats without any problem so I think the app is the problem - I can’t see...

personally IIRC the mallaig trains aren’t that frequent from Glasgow I think you may be lucky to get 2-4 hours at Mallaig depending what time you set off

Yes I’ve noticed the going south the 18:40 no longer has first class tickets in October they are £140 -£160 Going north in October first class tickets from Preston the 0814 has gone cheaper the 0853 no longer has them , the 0941 has gone up about £7

The railways can’t have their cake and eat it , they are forever saying advance tickets are only valid on the booked services to which the ticket holder has reserved the OP has stated that is he/she is doing and as such the duration of waiting times is irrelevant as long as the passenger abides...

I very much doubt you have to do anything it’s exactly the same train the “ minute earlier” doesn’t make any difference as you say probably just a automated email
