Was at Newcastle on Friday evening when it was announced the following train was delayed due to the above reasoning.

Looking at the route it took it would appear to have done this at Nunthorpe, knowing the set up there that seems a strange position to do so given the protecting signals as trains are usually turned there.

Was it a case that the train just missed its mark or was there more to it?

It's a rather vague description, isn't it?

Technically, this train below could be said to be delayed for the same reason!

(Image of Montparnasse rail disaster, where a train overran the buffers at the terminus and fell out of the front of the elevated station.)

I don’t know the ins and outs but there seems to have been some chaos at Middlesbrough with services delayed due to train crew issues. That train from Nunthorpe was probably delayed by the train from Middlesbrough to Whitby being delayed and having to wait for it to clear the single line

Could it be a PR friendly way of describing a SPAD? If a relieving driver was required it may have taken a while to arrange.

This is actually quite correct...though the SPAD was not the train in question.

What it _looks_ like is that 2D54 (1722 Darlington to Saltburn) had an issue at or approaching Middlesbrough station, leading it to lose a few minutes into the platform and then be cancelled beyond the station. I'm guessing that's the SPAD, although there were already some major issues with Saltburn trains, so it could have been something earlier.

Then it appears to have sat in Platform 2 until it left westbound at 1828, blocking the train behind it (2N38, 1556 Hexham to Whitby) from entering the station.

But here's the thing. By 1816, the time when 2W55 (1746 Battersby to Metrocentre) was due to leave Nunthorpe, control would have known that 2N38 wasn't going to need the single line as it's normally booked to do. So it's a little inexplicable that they didn't let 2W55 onto the single line, which it would have cleared before 1828. It could have made it to Newcastle on time or nearly so.

Good chance there's more to this than I know, but that's a summary from what RTT is telling me.

Train stopped right over the TPWS magnet?

No, an incident for a different train; as stated in post 5.

It’s highly unlikely that it’d be appropriate to share any further details than that in a public setting
