Anyone know why the 0850 today from Waterloo to Frome didn’t turn up?

Oh right I wonder why a ticket could be purchased!?
Presumably it didn't get changed in the timetable until after you booked the ticket, as they are only cancelling as they know they won't be able to run it.

Who did you book your ticket with? I would be tempted to complain if it were SWR.

SWR only sent out staff brief on Friday:

Due to a shortage of available train crew, we will not be operating services to/from Bristol Temple Meads on Saturdays from 2 October – 11 December 2021.
Customers with Advance tickets will be able to travel on GWR services on this route and should try to travel close to their original booked time.
GWR have also agreed to accept SWR Staff/Partner/Dependant passes on this route.
Please note that the latest departure from Bristol to Salisbury will be the 22:09 GWR service, with a change at Westbury for a replacement bus service to Warminster and Salisbury.

For what its worth, this is an entry on the SWR website confirming revised arrangements for their West of England services yesterday:

Changes to West of England services this weekend

We're sorry but due to an ongoing shortage of traincrew, we will be making some changes to West of England line services this Saturday (2nd October).

Engineering works may also affect your journey – for more information on this visit: https://www.southwesternrailway.com...-improvements/engineering-work-weekly-summary

A summary of the changes this Saturday is below:

Salisbury to London Waterloo stopping services will terminate at Basingstoke – customers will need to change at Basingstoke for onward services to Woking, Clapham Junction and Waterloo
London Waterloo to Salisbury services will start at Basingstoke. Customers travelling from Waterloo, Clapham Junction and Woking will need to catch an earlier service and change at Basingstoke
SWR services between Salisbury and Bristol will not run. Customers will need to use connecting GWR services via a change at Salisbury. If you have an Advance ticket, you will be able to travel on GWR services on this route. If you can, try to travel close to your original booked time.
Customers to / from Warminster and Westbury may be able to use the Salisbury – Yeovil via Westbury services which will continue to run.
SWR services to Yeovil Pen Mill / Yeovil Junction via Westbury will run as normal.
SWR services between London Waterloo and Exeter will run as normal.
Further Information
If you would prefer to use local buses to continue your journey please check Traveline - your rail ticket is not valid on local buses unless stated above.

It really is baffling that train companies don’t routinely contact ticket holders (whom they have the correct details for!) about timetable changes. This is not a hard fix to implement!

Doesn’t this bit from the above info:
“Customers to / from Warminster and Westbury may be able to use the Salisbury – Yeovil via Westbury services which will continue to run.
“SWR services to Yeovil Pen Mill / Yeovil Junction via Westbury will run as normal.”
…make it somewhat ambiguous because normally Frome calls are part of that service group?

London Waterloo to Salisbury services will start at Basingstoke. Customers travelling from Waterloo, Clapham Junction and Woking will need to catch an earlier service and change at Basingstoke

However passengers wanting from Salisbury -> Overton wanting Woking will have to wait at Basingstoke for 30 minutes for the following service from Exeter due to the service from Weymouth which connects with the train doesn't stop at Woking.

And the last service from London which connects with the Salisbury stopper is the Exeter service so effectively Andover & Salisbury are 1tph, meaning those trains are even busier.
