I am on 158906 with some new PA kit inside. How long has this been on? It has destination scrollers at the end of a carriage and screen showing next stops in the middle of the carriage. The carriage is also heavily sponsored on the outside

About six months. Some tables also have USB charging points. Only a one off though.

Have they been "three car'd"? Hence the 9XX?
No; it's one of the ten former West Yorkshire PTE sponsored units, numbered in the series 158901 - 910.

Northern's 3-car units are the former North West Trains units (with ex-TPE centre cars) numbered 158752 - 759.

Ah! The former Metro liveried examples?

I'd completely forgotten about those!

Curious history really, the 158s. Can't think of any other second gen unit fleet that's seen so many renumberings, reforms, and general messing about!

The 150s have seen a bit of jiggery-pokery down the years in terms of hybrid reformations, but yeah, the 158s have seen an awful lot of permutations of hybrid formations (with 156 vehicles for a short while when new and later as 3-car hybrids with various operators, and with renumberings to suit). With the ex-TPE units in particular being converted to 159/1s, donating centre cars to Northern units or generally being moved around, some of the formations and a lot of the allocations are now quite mixed up!
