I find it fascinating to know what rules each person sets for themselves :D
For units I do individual mileage for each motor car and the unit mileage becomes the minimum mileage across the motor cars of that particular unit. I ignore any renumbering or reformation.
So for the 345s as motor cars were added they would have to be done again as at least one motor car would have zero miles. If they had added non-motor coaches they would not have to be done again as there would be no motor cars with zero miles.
Likewise if a "new" unit is created e.g. GWR 3-car 158s, if I have had the motor cars as 2-car units they do not need to be done again and unit mileage is the minimum across the motor cars.
I consider the 319/769 a simple renumbering as are the locos 47 to 57 or 56 to 69.

I always advocate (to those who do units for haulage) that you should do it by vehicle number, rather than set number. By this approach, if you have had a seven car set which then becomes a nine car, there are two vehicles that have not been part of a train you have travelled on.

Being fully hard core, you should make nine journeys, one in each vehicle, to get them all for 'ridage'.

It's much easier just doing locos!

That just seems excessive! On trains you use all the time, then fair enough as it provides a bit of variety, but I couldn't do it for everything. Granted, I used to record which coach I travelled in but that was years ago and I genuinely can't understand how I did it for so long. I gave up on that idea a few years ago and it's much better now. Indeed, at one point I didn't even bother writing down the numbers of the trains I got on! That soon stopped and I just record the numbers. I keep a vague interest these days on a few classes for mileage, but not many.

For units I do individual mileage for each motor car and the unit mileage becomes the minimum mileage across the motor cars of that particular unit. I ignore any renumbering or reformation.

My brain hurts just thinking about how complicated that is

Even those two statements are inconsistent! Why would you have to travel in all the multiple unit vehicles, when you don’t (normally!) travel on the loco itself?

Locos for haulage (or 'pushage' if on the back), unit vehicles (and coaching stock) for ridage. DVTs for neither!

Seems straightforward to me! :D

The problem I have with riding in each car of a multiple unit is you could just move from one car to the next through a journey. If I board at one end and walk through the entire length of the train then get off at the next stop does that count as having every vehicle?

Depends on your own rule. I remember when I was first doing MUs by individual coaches, way back in 2006, I insisted on changing coaches only by leaving one and joining another. In this particular instance, the forum meet had done the end of the line (as it was back then) at Drumgelloch on whatever 320/3 it was. We stayed on to go back out, and I was going to 'tick off' another coach. I waited until the next stop to jump out and change coach, then walked back through after we'd moved off.

I didn't stick to that rule for long  I changed rules a few times until I stopped doing such a thing in the late 2010s, but the one rule which never changed was that only coach per move could be counted. Whether said move was 1 mile or 500 miles, one vehicle only. That rule, if I was to start doing it again, would remain in place, otherwise it would be deemed 'cheating' in my view!

The biggest issue with doing units by coach is when you get the intercity units where 2+ coaches are First Class, that could get expensive

769007 (Heath High Level -> Penarth -> Cardiff Central)
769421 (Heath High Level -> Penarth -> Heath High Level)

Welsh 769s cleared :)

A late notice change of plan this morning when I saw both were out, 007 was more of a risk as it hadn't been out most of the week when I was checking. Just one more Northern example to get, hopefully it will be out next Saturday/Monday when I'm in that area.

I haven't visited as many heritage lines as I could or should but as local Spa Valley Railway were having a Diesel Gala, I headed down to Tunbridge Wells.
I was pulled, pushed and hauled by the following:

D5054
31430
33063
73141

Class 207 DMU
1317
***

On the way home:

465925, Southeastern, Tunbridge Wells to Tonbridge

Bitterly protesting, Tram 3137 was forcibly dragged by 3086 to Rochdale this morning and the pair took me to work...

Caught up with my logs for the last week:

10/8:
720555 (Tottenham Hale - Hertford East)
720560 (Cheshunt - Broxbourne -> Liverpool Street)
720575 (Broxbourne - Tottenham Hale)

Cleared for mileage:
465904
465925

Last 465/9s now cleared for ten miles, which clears the class unless one of the 465/2s I need comes back. (236)

11/8:
720105 (Liverpool Street - Shenfield)
720106 (Liverpool Street - Shenfield)
720570 (Liverpool Street - Shenfield)

745004 (Chelmsford - Stratford)
745109 (Chelmsford - Stratford)
745110 (Liverpool Street - Harlow Town)

Cleared for mileage:
466002
466030

Just one more 'active' 466 left, but that is in Doncaster works [009], plus one more stored (043)

12/8:
484003 (Ryde St Johns Road - Shanklin -> Ryde Esplanade)
484004 (Ryde Pier Head - Sandown & Shanklin -> Ryde Esplanade)

2 more of the Island Line units to go, 001 & 005, assuming 005 has actually worked in public.

13/8:
Cleared for mileage:
Metrolink Tram 3117

Last of the 'older' trams needed for a mile, I was quite pleased when it rolled into Victoria on a semi-required service to head towards Altrincham, especially when I was an hour late due to the TPE 68 turning into Hotcat.

15/8:
769431 (Oxford Road - Westhoughton) [Last Northern 769!, an added bonus because I checked RTT in the morning around 8am and it wasn't showing as being out, but I randomly checked again around 09:45 and I noticed it was out, so had to change plans from a Metrolink hunting day

Metrolink Trams:
3138 [Cornbrook - St Peters Square]
3139 [Cornbrook - Piccadilly]
3142 [St Peters Square - Etihad Campus]

Also cleared 399207 for a mile in Sheffield, just leaves 399204 for the entire Supertram fleet for a mile

16/8:
720526 [Liverpool Street - Chelmsford]
745003 [Chelmsford - Ipswich
755411 [Ely - Brandon]
755418 [Stowmarket - Ipswich]

Cleared for mileage:
755408
LU91189

17/8:
720501 (Ipswich - Stratford)
745006 (Ipswich - Norwich)
755338 (Woodbridge - Ipswich)
755401 (Norwich - Diss)
755405 (Norwich - Brandon)

A good couple days in Suffolk/Norfolk, leaves me with just 1 of the 745s (103, which I believe is long term broken) & 1 more 755 [406]. I was originally going to do some linear hops heading towards London yesterday but there was overhead wire issues at Chelmsford causing a reduction of services from Colchester towards London)

I'm pretty sure 745 103 is back in traffic; I saw it a couple of weeks ago with passengers on board.

I decided my last 755 was more worthy of being chased than another required 720 out on Cambridge services, getting lucky it was working towards Stansted Airport so easy to grab for over ten miles.l
