I heard that 170632>170532 and 170635>170535 i.e. those 2 sets of 170/6 are shortened to 2-coaches. But i wondered if anyone have news about 170/5s in the XC fleet which are already being lengthened and renumbered?
Lastly if anyone knows when will 196 start its first rev. service?

Article in the Railway Gazette says that the Class 196 DMUs are planned for introduction during the second half of 2020

Have these 170's already had their formation changed?

Yes, it’s been reported in other threads such as those discussing WMR livery changes. I had a quick search using the set numbers, but there doesn’t seem to be a suitable existing thread looking at the move from a XC perspective...

Are these middle cars going into 170518-23 or are they going into 6 of the 7 2 car 170/1s?

Thanks for that, I lost my way a little with those developments. Will have to update my book now!

Not usually. The vehicle number is the key record, unless a vehicle was totally rebuilt I think the rules mean they keep their original number.
Just think back to the central class 323s which after being reformed were renumbered to match the set number.

Yet none of SWT’s 158s 159s, or 458/5s individual vehicle numbers were changed. There are classes where although the vehicle numbers run in sequence (as built) they don’t directly include the set number, so I guess there’d be not much reason to change anything.

And of course the rather random GWR 158 reforms.

I was on 170535 yesterday so that definitely is.
I wonder if, in the context of this thread‘s opening scenario the question was more about whether the centre vehicle donated by 170635 is in service with XC yet?

AIUI the first two MS cars from the WMR sets have been low loadered to Bristol Barton Hill for repainting / vinylling / branding. I would guess they will return to Tyseley by road and augment the XC sets there followed by test runs to make sure all works.

Why???
If the middle cars are put into 518-23. then all XC 170/5s will be 3 car, no need to renumber them to distinguish them. Also, the /1s are a mix of 2 and 3 car sets and they haven't felt the need to renumber those.

Because the 170/1s were made up to 3-cars with a new vehicle, whereas the WMR centre cars are being moved between subclasses, and this way, EMRs will all then be 2-car 170/5s, and XCs will be 3-car 170/6s.

According to WMR on facebook, they won't be entering service until next year (2021) now.

Will be interesting to see if any more beyond the initial two centre cars will be removed - seems like the usual cascade from new stock issue where XC have a agreement for them all by a certain date (based on original 196 delivery timetable) meaning that there will be an unplanned for period of short forming at WMR.

As mentioned upthread 170630-170635 are donating their MS cars to 170518-170523. The former become 170530-170535 before their replacement by 196s and their transfer to EMR.

Not known whether 170518-170523 will be renumbered as XC haven't renumbered any other rolling stock despite staff suggestions for the four car 221s to be renumbered 2210xx to differentiate them from the five car units.

Does it cost anything to renumber them? If so, you can bet XC won't do it!

They renumbered their HST power cars and converted MK3 coaches back in 2008/09.
