The XC 170s are in a very poor state inside, hardly surprising since it's been years since any interior work and don't even have plug sockets/USBs. both the seating and carpets are very worn.
So you're saying they didn't change anything so they'd match? :D

It's part of the issue with how long the franchise has been dragged out for. It's just extension after extension and as a consequence the rolling stock has suffered through lack of investment.

The failure of rail privatisation. The trains are owned by a Rosco and have a shelf life, and it is very very unlikely a 20 year old diesel train will not be signed up for more work. But should a train interior be allowed to become scruffy, untidy and threadbare because the DfT has lost control of rail franchising ?

In the ideal world, no.

But this is not an ideal world. No TOC spends money it doesn’t need to as a franchise draws to a close, so this running down of the fleet is a universal phenomenon.

The issue with XC is that the franchise should have ended a good while ago, but instead it gets extended little by little and this gives the franchisee no confidence to encourage them to spend extra money when there is insufficient time to recoup their investment. Had the XC franchisee known this would drag on for as long as it has then maybe they’d have considered it worth doing, but obviously they didn’t and so decisions about long term investments could not be taken.

To be fair even when first refurbished into the current internal colour scheme the units looked dark and dirty and the /5s and /6s must be some of the only units that appeared to be in better condition and newer prior to a refurb rather than after it.

Fairly sure there is at least one more floating about, as I’m sure 620(?) was at Tyseley about a week ago. Not sure it’s been out in traffic, though.

170620 is definitely in traffic, it was working the 10:13 Peterborough - Cambridge all this week.

Nice to see that the original layout on the 'new' centre cars is being kept, much better legroom and window alignment!

So, I think that means we are waiting for 618, 619, 621 and 622 to enter service as 3 car units.

Are 518, 519, 521 and 522 still in service as 2 car units?

So are these ex-WMR centre cars different to the other XC ones?

If the extra centre cars have kept the same original layout then they will have 4 less seats than the the rest of XC 170 3 car fleet, 76 seats vs 80 seats.

Very little news of the weekly moves recently although 170521 was photographed on the 5Z70 Tyseley to Bristol move yesterday

170503/4/12/15, unless on the Shrewsbury line, have been stopped and ready for refurbishment according to a guard. this is reinforced by the fact they haven't been seen for a few weeks on the Worcester line, but as i said, could be on the Shrewsbury line.

No only saw 503 arrive at Worcs yesterday on the ECS. Only happened to notice as it was unbranded. To be honest only tend to look at numbers when I’m driving them & then only if there’s an issue.
