Thanks Ash, there were 10 of us on the course and we were all steam mad. We made a point of popping out to see Crewe South shed during the course. We also were shown Crewe works and saw the last steam engine being painted 92220.

btw, is that a young Rowan Atkinson (2nd right) on the course?;)
I don't think so, he would have been 12 at the time so not in the 6th form at that stage. Most likely 2nd form?

That doesn't distract from the fascination of the subject matter, of course. :)

I have been interested in the APT for a long time and remembered that, in 1967, I was on an Easter residential course for school sixth formers, with BR based at Crewe. We went to the "New" Derby research centre and were shown a test rig investigating bogie "Hunting" (Pictured). Later, I think, this led to the High speed bogie design and its use on the APT-E and APT-P. I wonder how many of those on the course became BR engineers...I failed the medical with slight colour blindness!
What a fascinating anecdote! and interesting photo... As I said as O.P keep the stories coming! its great reading them all

Here is 370 003 ( London end ) / 370 007 ( north end ) passing through Queen's Park at 13.05 on 1st May 1985, heading towards Euston. The only time I managed to see the APT actually working.

Went on it when I was 15, wrote a write up for an enthusiasts club magazine. Can’t remember the club though, was worth being member though organised depot visits and trips.

As O.P thanks for sharing that! what a detailed piece of writing.. A great read! My own article is finished and on file at a magazine ready for publication in the spring/early summer otherwise I'd have been begging to be able to quote from that.

No worries I was going thru an old folder today and found it. I think there was guy on the train working out the speeds..seems little high to me now though 36 years later..
