I guess there must have been some DMU moves in here as well, but I haven’t noted them.

Thursday 17/05/79
40071 0050 Stockport – York
55014 0606 York – Doncaster
DMU Doncaster – Leeds
46029 0735 Leeds – Sheffield
47476 1522 Sheffield – York
The eastbound “Bangor Mails” was heavily delayed over the Pennines, converting a 10 minute late start from Stockport into a 45 minute late arrival into York. That meant I missed the last of the southbound overnights, so I hung around for the first Deltic-hauled departure south. I doubled back with a unit to Leeds then took 46029 to Sheffield. I arrived there just moments after DMU 50049 + 56032 had gone through the trap points in the middle road, and derailed. I decided to hang around and watch the rerailing operations, which took several hours, then caught 47476 home later in the afternoon.

Saturday 17/05/80
82005 0008 Crewe – Stafford
85007 0033 Stafford – Crewe
86328 0234 Crewe – Wigan North Western
86209 0258 Wigan North Western – London Euston
81001 0915 Euston – Kingmoor
81001 1430 Kingmoor – Euston
40075 2100 Kings Cross – York
After passing my interview for a Train Trolley Caterer job I was told to report to Euston at 0845 Saturday morning to work the 0915 National Express Coaches charter to Carlisle. What better way of preparing for this than by doing a WCML overnight? The train I was working was a rake of seven Mk1 FOs which conveyed coach loads of (mainly) pensioners by rail to Carlisle to start their various week-long coach tours of Scotland and Northern England, returning from Carlisle with the previous week’s load. Unlike normal train trolley catering where you push a trolley up and down the train, this was mostly distribution of lunch boxes, with hot drinks, and no cash changing hands. On my first trip I was accompanied by somebody who knew the ropes. A day with over 600 miles of class 81 haulage and being paid for it as well. After a full day’s work, straight off a WCML overnight, it was the turn of an ECML overnight with 40075!

Thursday 17/05/84
The first week of the influx of 31/4s onto the south Trans Pennine diagrams, and at last there was some action. I was on night shift in Leeds Control, and I kept my ears open for the conversations from the Power Controllers at the far end of the office. The Sheffield controller was bemoaning the fact that the 31/4s he had received were a poorly bunch, and he was having to get 37263 from Tinsley to cover a 31/4 diagram. That caught my attention!
31439 0705 Leeds – Cross Gates
DMU Cross Gates – Leeds
45134 0742 Leeds – Manchester Victoria
37263 0941 Manchester Piccadilly – Hull, via Romiley, Sheffield, Masborough, Doncaster, Goole.
31428 1245 Hull – York (and home to bed)
47429 1930 York – Leeds (and back onto night shift …)
I’d not had a 37 to Hull previously, so this little jaunt was much appreciated.

Friday 17/05/85
… and having moved from Leeds Control to Glasgow Control, my ears were just as well attuned to the possibilities in Scotland. So, after a late shift I headed north overnight …
(16/05/85 47469 2330 Glasgow QS – Perth)
47595 0110 Perth – Inverness
47209 0502 Inverness – Keith
47040 0611 Keith – Elgin
47118 0646 Elgin – Inverness
… which was all just filling in before the main show, namely:
37037 0920 Inverness – Glasgow QS
A 37 over the Highland Main Line in daylight. Quite unusual, and much appreciated by me.

Sunday 17/05/87
Another change in job from Glasgow Control to Crewe Speedlink Control. This was my move prior to starting the new job:
47665 1410 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Dumfries
86250 1632 Carlisle – Preston
47350 1754 Preston – Crewe via Bolton, Manchester Victoria, Denton Jn., Stockport.
(This was all the 1410 Glasgow – Euston, a typical Sunday trip with multiple diversions and dragging).

47410 1823 Leeds – Dewsbury
47520 1839 Dewsbury – York
47525 2025 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Micklefield
31208 2137 Micklefield – Leeds
31314 2200 Leeds – Doncaster
47426 2325 Doncaster – York
Another evening getting to grips with the new hourly York – Liverpool service – and coming away disappointed. The trip from Micklefield was on the 2039 from Hull, which included coach E25645 with the compartment window glass engraved "THIRD"!

Sunday 18/05/80
I was due out from Euston in the morning on another train trolley job, but I was knackered and overdossed to York on the 2100 from Kings Cross. At York I boarded the 2210 Edinburgh – London sleepers only, 46033, middle road. I was ejected at Doncaster after a crew change, so I waited for 55003 behind on the 1915 from Aberdeen, which ran via the Joint Lines and Hertford North, arriving Kings Cross 75’ late (on the retimings). At Euston the train I was supposed to be on – an LNER Society Charter to Bangor – had departed without me, so I gathered up my stock and set off in pursuit, flogging my wares as I went.
46033 02xx York – Doncaster via Hare Park
55003 0338 Doncaster – Kings Cross via Joint Lines, Hertford North
86232 0855 Euston – Crewe via Northampton, Stechford, Bushbury
47440 1149 Crewe – Chester
40035 1314 Chester – Holyhead
40035 1633 Holyhead – Bangor
47367 1756 Bangor – Crewe
86248 19xx Crewe – Euston via Northampton
I knew (from previous trips) that the 0855 Euston – Holyhead was a rake of Mk 1 coaches and no buffet, so that was an ideal train for me. I trolleyed up and down on that as far as Chester, alighting there to recharge my urn with hot water from the station buffet – and (purely coincidentally) to pick up the diagrammed class 40 on the 1155 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead. 40035 did the honours. Another top-up of the urn took place at Holyhead, then back with 40035 to Bangor, where I was reunited with the LNER Society charter, and their unlovely 47367. I carried on with the charter back through to Euston.

Monday 18/05/81
On the way home from my first trip to Ireland …
47437 0107 Holyhead – Crewe
85019 0344 Crewe – Euston

Wednesday 18/05/88
319 009 KX Thameslink – Elephant & Castle
5044 Elephant & Castle – Lewisham
5155 Lewisham – Charing Cross
86243 1930 Euston – Crewe
(Was this the last weeks of the old Southern EPB stock on this route, perhaps?).

Saturday 18th May 1985

Yesterday's reminisces had me on ETH Syphons on the Cambrian Coast. Today goes back a year and it's Syphons again, but of a more interesting variety whilst not getting as far as the coast. This was to be a regular Saturday day out for the following four weeks.

47533 Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury on the 07.30 Euston - Aberystwyth

37186/37124 Shrewsbury to Caersws on the same service

37251 Caersws to Welshpool on the 11.10 Aberystwyth to Euston

37235 Welshpool to Caersws on the 09.35 Euston to Aberystwyth

37124/37186 Caersws to Shrewsbury on the 13.40 Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury

25276/25051 Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton on the empty stock working back to Wolverhampton

Not a bad day.

Sounds like a great day! A couple of phots from your outing on Class37.co.uk:

Class37.co.uk

Class37.co.uk

Must have been nothing happening in the North East that day, as I have no moves recorded. Probably went to the pub.

18th May 1987:

87030 New St - Carlisle 1S59
Another alternative route to get back to Newcastle

18th May 1988:
47503 Newcastle - Stalybridge 1M26
81005 Stockport - New St 1G20
That worked out very nicely! Even better than the 85 two days earlier. The Brum- Manc corridor used to be good for Roarers.

Very impressive. I need a couple of those 37s.

Would love to here what you did in Ireland!
Without going into too many embarrassing details, it was a straightforward trip to Tralee and back, out with 076 and back with 071. There were 15 of us on a group ticket, and my introduction to CIE was quite an eye-opener.

Meanwhile, here's the next instalment:
Saturday 19/05/79
A weekend visit to a friend in Liverpool – shame about the power:
46049 1110 York – Manchester Victoria
47410 1330 Manchester Victoria – Liverpool Lime Street

Saturday 19/05/84
The first Summer Saturday of the new timetable, and it is blowing a blizzard! The first Newcastle – Yarmouth of the season would need to be boiler fitted, otherwise the pensioners would suffer from hypothermia. I skived off my night shift in Leeds a bit early to make it all the way to Newcastle to cover it:
43069 + 43065 0620 Leeds – Newcastle
37115 0844 Newcastle – Norwich, via Hambleton, ECML, Peterborough, Ely avoider
The load was 12 Mk 1s, steam heat. This remains my highest mileage non-railtour move with a 37.
I headed south from Norwich to have a little play on the Gatwicks (this being before they got a dedicated pool of locos). I scored the 47 and all four 73s.
47571 1432 Norwich – Liverpool Street
73119 1715 Victoria – Gatwick
73104 1750 Gatwick – Victoria
73135 1830 Victoria – Gatwick
73110 1905 Gatwick – Victoria
43097 + 43041 2000 Kings Cross – York

Sunday 19/05/85
The first Sunday of timetabled trains on the West Highland Line:
37051 1750 Glasgow QS – Crianlarich
37111 1942 Crianlarich – Glasgow QS (+ 97251 Ethel 1)

Ooh exciting, it would be good to get some more Southern Region contributions.

33106 is the only 33/1 I had for haulage - from Southampton to Bristol TM on 28th February 1981.

Not a lot from me either:
Sunday 20/05/79
47461 1910 Liverpool Lime St – York
I had hoped for a nicer end to my weekend in Liverpool. Oh well.

Wednesday 20/05/87
Having worked early shift training on my new job in Crewe, I had an afternoon free.
87006 1520 Crewe – Preston
87035 1615 Preston – Crewe
37430 1719 Crewe – Hereford
37427 1943 Hereford – Crewe

Wednesday 20/05/98
Returning home to Reading from my office in Paddington, I found the 1647 to Liverpool wasn’t the usual boring 478xx:
56035 1647 Reading – Coventry
47822 1827 Coventry – Reading

followed by a trip into Reading for the opticians:
Cl.117 DMU 51333 Cholsey-Reading
50023 with Mk1s Reading-Goring (commuter service, probably Pad-Oxford, stopping at all those Thames Valley stations after Reading)

An odd Friday night move. I wonder if I'd gone hoping for a 40 forward from Preston and had been bowled. Still a good Roarer anyway.

83001 Warrington BQ to Preston, on 1P19 19.12 Crewe to Barrow
86316 Preston to Warrington BQ

1982 was my first full year as a basher as opposed to spotting. The only moves book I have is from 21st May to 4th September. Was that the summer timetable? Some of my post September moves exist in my class listings, but not the full days. Anyway May to September is full of good fun to be revealed over the coming weeks.

I think 83001 was reason enough for that move! Very nice.

I only had one run with 83001, Crewe - Euston on the up Irish Mail. They were difficult locos to bash, so I endorse xotGD's sentiments.
Meanwhile, here are some more of my catastrophic ramblings. Enjoy:

Monday 21/05/79
43088 + 43116 1710 Harrogate – Leeds
40007 1807 Leeds – Settle
At Settle – as usual – we went for a pint in the Golden Lion, then returned to the station. Monica – the wizened old station mistress – told us the train was running 60 minutes late after a loco failure, so we returned to the pub. We strolled back to the station 50 minutes later, to be met by Monica walking the other way, having just seen off the train, and locked up the station. “You’ve missed it! It made up time. You’ve missed it” she chanted cheerily. There was no other public transport out of Settle that late in the day, so we went back to the Golden Lion for a third time and got a bed for the night! Consider that a lesson learned the hard (and expensive) way. I found out later that the train we missed had been a pair of 40s, one live (and required) and one dead.

(Friday 20/05/83)
47552 2234 York – Crewe
Saturday 21/05/83
86227 0235 Crewe – Preston
85014 0409 Preston – Crewe
EMU Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
47570 0750 Manchester Victoria – Leeds
31114 0921 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
DMU Westgate – Kirkgate, to visit a transport book shop, then walked back.
45137 1109 Wakefield Westgate – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Skipton, Skipton – Lancaster
86242 1425 Lancaster – Carlisle
87015 1543 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
37108 1843 Glasgow QS – Crianlarich
37178 2022 Crianlarich – Cowlairs
37011 2236 Cowlairs - Mossend

Tuesday 21/05/85
47707 1530 Glasgow QS – Haymarket
47012 1618 Haymarket – Kirkcaldy
47528 1718 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
All this was simply filling in time prior to the main attraction:
20226 + 20149 1810 Edinburgh – Carstairs
86323 1823 Carstairs – Glasgow Central

Thursday 21/05/87
47402 1501 Crewe – Birmingham NS
31461 1620 Birmingham NS – Nuneaton
31319 1708 Nuneaton – Birmingham NS
87006 1818 Birmingham NS – Euston
87021 2030 Euston – Crewe
The 1818 from New Street was 19 minutes late start, shunting out the defective buffet car. We arrived at Euston on time, having run from New Street in 85 minutes, including three stops. The last 45 miles were covered in 30 minutes pass to stop. (Nowadays with a clear run a 125 mph Pendolino does it in about 28 minutes). This train was Mk 2 stock “limited” to 100 mph. Very lively.

Sunday 21/05/89 “Midland Main Line Rail Day”
90016 0215 Crewe – Euston
47500 dragging 90016 Bletchley to Euston EN65 signal
33022 + 33021 0850 St Pancras – Leicester
33022 + 33021 1110 Leicester – Wellingborough via Corby
56017 1347 Wellingborough – Leicester via Corby
58050 1520 Leicester – Wellingborough via Corby
20145 + 20228 1717 Wellingborough – Leicester
(20228 was being dragged dead most of the time, having overheated and shut down)
37066 + 37058 1810 Leicester – St Pancras
37058 + 37066 2015 St Pancras – Leicester
On the final run of the day the 37s were being driven hard, and reached 98 mph twice and 96 mph twice.

21st May 1983:

We saw from the arrivals board at Newcastle that a service from Carlisle was running very late so chanced our luck...

25051 Blaydon - Newcastle 2E72

That'll do nicely.

21st May 1986:
47466 New St - Cheltenham 1V76
47432 Cheltenham - New St 1E91

The beer was better than the traction.

That must have been a right stagger up to Ardsley Tunnel! Did you jump off, walk on ahead, get a photo and climb back on board again?!

Oh I was used to the "charms" of class 31s by then. I often travelled home from college in Harrogate on the 1652 Harrogate - Kings Cross, usually load 8 or 9 - sometimes 10 - air cons, so the ETH was switched on. The poor little Goyle would really struggle, but then the schedule was slack, so it didn't really matter. High entertainment and low speed. Just don't expect any high speeds or punctual arrivals, and you won't be disappointed.
