Yes, should have stayed on 1S81!

1S81 was a wonderful train ! You could travel the short distance from Motherwell to Coatbridge Central and ride behind a Roarer and a Type 2. On the 2nd April 1983 (a Saturday, so the train ran minus its usual two Postal vehicles and consisted of a CK and a BSK) I used it from Carlisle to Larbert with 81005 and 26024.

Yes, it was a favourite train of mine as well. I even had a pair of 20s on it once, when the train was terminating at Larbert. It was certainly good for a Roarer to Mossend most nights - with spectacular performance on load 4, or load 2 on Saturdays as @Falcon1200 says. Even Kingmoor celebrity loco 40122 put in an appearance (at least) once.

We both did 1M22 on that day in 1983.

So we did! I think you had the more interesting part of the journey. And if when you boarded you got a wiff of two lads who hadn't had a bath for nearly a week - sorry!

And all I got was a Can/2. Boo!

Friday 30th July 1982

Off to sunny Buckinghamshire for a family wedding and what an eventful journey (the return on Tuesday is boring).

87031 WBQ to Crewe, 1A40 09.37 Carlisle to Euston
86323 Crewe to Birmingham NS, 1V41 11.20 Lime St to Paddington
50036 Birmingham NS to Coventry (nearly, about 0.75 miles short), 1V41
25089 dragging dead 50036 into Coventry
47144 Coventry to Banbury, 1V41
Unit to Princes Risborough.

I have an asterisk in my book with the footnote - lineside fires, points failure, loco failure, tank blew up at Leamington Spa - WHAT A TRAIN!

Saturday 30th July 1983

Sometimes the simplest pleasures are the best...

Unit Padgate to Oxford Road
Fast walk to Piccadilly
40194 Man Picc to Skegness, 1E67 08.04 off Picc
40194 Skegness to Man Picc, 1M54 13.20 off Skeg
Unit back to Padgate

Aaaah... Wonderful. 310.5 miles of 40 haulage with no effort.

Wednesday 30th July 1986

Off to spend a couple of weeks with my girlfriend in Slough...

31455 Warrington C to Man Picc, 1E85 10.45 Lime St to Yarmouth
87016 (nice) Man Picc to Euston, 1A?? 12.00 off Picc
47607 (required) Paddington to Slough, 1??? 16.20 to Oxford

MONDAY 30th JULY 1973:

The first day of my second Freedom of Scotland week. (How I wish I could find my notes from the first one in the Summer of 1972!). At the tender age of 15 1/2, my friend and I were not permitted to stay away from home overnight, so it had to be a series of out-and-back day trips from Helensburgh. Therefore the Far North line had to wait for another four years - although I had already done the Kyle line earlier in the year during a family holiday in the Highlands. At this stage we were primarily into line bashing and spotting, but the trips did throw up some interesting haulage.

EMU Helensburgh Central - Glasgow QS
5116+5127 Glasgow QS - Inverness
SC 51781/59680/51788 Inverness -
Aberdeen
1935 Aberdeen - Glasgow QS
EMU Glasgow QS - Helensburgh Central

Unfortunately, I don't have time this morning to list the locos seen en route but, if anyone is interested, I can add an edit when I get back into Glasgow this evening.....coincidentally, from the same circuit as above!

@NorthWestRover might recognise one of the moves:

Monday 30/07/79
I worked early shift in the station buffet at Manchester Victoria, then came out for an afternoon bash. Today was a day of connections …
40149 1530 Manchester Victoria – Liverpool Lime Street (1217 ex Newcastle)
This was 10 minutes late arriving, and dropped to 20 minutes late by Liverpool.
EMU + DMU via Rock Ferry to Chester for
40156 1853 Chester – Crewe, making a -2 connection into
47442 1918 Crewe – Chester
40055 2005 Chester – Crewe
This was 45 minutes late, regained 5 minutes en route.
86039 2117 Crewe – Preston
To cap it all, this was over 30 minutes late into Preston, so all connections and last trains to all points of the compass were lost. I was put onto:
DMU (ECS) 23:20 Preston – Manchester Victoria
Well past midnight by the time I got back to my bedsit. Up early for another early shift to start it all over again tomorrow …

Wednesday 30/07/80
In the evening I would sometimes stroll into Kings Cross in the hope there might be a class 40 on one of the Peterborough commuter trains. Failing that, over to Euston for a run with a Roarer on one of the Northampton commuter services (“The Master Cobblers”).
85037 1723 Euston – Bletchley
86207 1806 Bletchley – Euston
Then back to Kings Cross to see if matters have improved:
55009 2015 Kings Cross – York
This was 53’ late into York, after running at 20 mph from Retford to Doncaster, suspected hot box (false alarm).
(Thursday 31/07/80)
At York, I watched the comings and goings, waiting for a suitable locomotive to take me back south:
55006 0229 York – Kings Cross … and back to work.

Friday 30/07/82
87022 1545 Euston – Crewe
This was routed Down Fast – Low Level – Down Fast at Willesden to get around 86249 which had failed on the 1540 Euston – Shrewsbury.
DMU Crewe – Chester
47474 1853 Chester – Rhyl
40056 1941 Rhyl – Chester
40008 2058 Chester – Manchester Victoria
40124 2240 Manchester Victoria – Bangor
Sadly that was as far as I could take 40124, as I was back at work in Euston in the morning …

Saturday 30/07/83
I had made a long and unpleasantly Sulzery trip all the way to Holyhead to cover the 0125 Holyhead – Birmingham, which was diagrammed for a class 40. Would it produce?
40063 0125 Holyhead – Crewe
EMU Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
40194 0804 Manchester Piccadilly – Skegness, via Romiley, New Mills, Sheffield, Retford, Lincoln Central
40194 1320 Skegness – Manchester Piccadilly
DMU Manchester Piccadilly – Sheffield, Sheffield – Worksop
40172 1931 Worksop – Manchester Piccadilly
EMU Manchester Piccadilly – Crewe
40080 (+86218 dead) 2354 Crewe – Preston (via main line)
Quite a high mileage day, with track spanning all the way from Holyhead to Skegness, and some decent mileage off a couple of NB 40s too.

Monday 30/07/84
Required 37117 is working the 1610 Edinburgh – Carstairs, which then goes on to work the daytime Kensington – Stirling motorail forward from Carstairs, so there’s no chance of picking it up later. I have to rely on getting it first time:
47704 1530 Glasgow Queen Street – Haymarket
37117 1613 Haymarket – Carstairs
Result! Better still, I got chatting with the guard, and was invited to join him for a run to Stirling on the motorail. That involved clambering aboard middle road at Carstairs, which would be frowned upon nowadays.
37117 17xx Carstairs – Stirling
47546 1919 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street

Tuesday 30/07/85
Time for a day on the Southern:
86252 0344 Crewe – Euston
EMU Victoria – East Croydon
33024 0726 East Croydon – East Grinstead
33024 0826 East Grinstead – London Bridge
EMU London Bridge – Waterloo East
73123 0940 Waterloo – Basingstoke
This was the boat train to Weymouth Quay. I’d never had a train to Weymouth Quay, and despite being sat on this one I decided I had other priorities, and put it off for another day. I never did do the track to Weymouth Quay. Sometimes I just get it wrong …
33109 1124 Basingstoke – Reading
47068 1154 Reading – Guildford (0645 York – Portsmouth Harbour)
DMU Guildford – Gatwick Airport
I had a specific train I needed to cover from Dover Western Docks, but I had a little time on the Gatwicks first:
73127 1335 Gatwick Airport – Victoria
73122 1415 Victoria – Gatwick Airport
73117 1450 Gatwick Airport – Victoria
EMU Victoria – Dover Western Docks
47019 1800 Dover Western Docks – Mitre Bridge via Ashford, Hither Green, Lewisham, Factory Jn.
“Eurochildren” charter, conveying 580 Irish children back from France to Ireland via Stranraer. My interest lay mainly in the loco allocated to work it forward from Carlisle, although 47019 was also a disappointment (even though it was required) as the previous time this train ran it had been a pair of 33s out of Dover. I was welcomed on board at Dover (railwayman returning home to Scotland…)
86256 2003 Mitre Bridge – Carlisle

Saturday 30/07/88
47438 1000 Crewe – Shrewsbury
37278 + 37185 1048 Shrewsbury – Welshpool
37684 + 37682 1155 Welshpool – Shrewsbury
DMU Shrewsbury – Crewe

Friday 30/07/93
An after-work leap …
91016 1620 Kings Cross – Grantham
DMU Grantham – Boston
20132 + 20087 1845 Boston – Nottingham
DMU Nottingham – Birmingham New Street, EMU New Street – International
37421 2152 Birmingham International – Holyhead

30th July 1982

Starting with the usual 5p "Transfare" move:

45045 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04

Back at the Toon, and 40035 produced on 1M04 to Carlisle. I didn't have sufficient cash in my pocket, so had to go home for funds, and return to purchase a 2-day Northumbrian Ranger. Fortunately, it was not swapped at Carlisle:

40035 Hexham - Chathill 1S15
47563 Chathill - Newcastle 1E21

30th July 1983

There was still a bit of the Far North to yellow-pen today:

47489 Perth - Inverness 1N05
37260 Inverness - Wick 2K03
37260 Wick - Inverness 2N26
47427 Inverness - Keith 2A53
26030 + 27007 Keith - Inverness 2N34 (The only time I had a 26/27 combo)
47149 Inverness - Keith 2A57
47209 Keith - Inverness 2N38
47118 + 47708 Inverness - Stirling 1T04 (Bit of an unusual pairing; better than two 47/4s anyway)

30th July 1988

While some folk were enjoying big pairs of 37s on the Cambrian, look what was on offer in the North East:

47432 Newcastle - Darlo 1M26
47424 Darlo - Newcastle 1E57

Rancid!

Another early shift in Manchester Victoria station buffet, followed by more class 40s:
40012 1540 Manchester Victoria – Llandudno Junction
40129 1828 Llandudno Junction – Manchester Victoria
40026 2111 Manchester Victoria – Adlington
DMU Adlington – Manchester Victoria

Saturday 31/07/82
I have to work early shift in London, so I have to leave the prime class 40 hunting ground of North Wales for a while:
47476 0146 Bangor – Crewe
85016 0349 Crewe – Euston
.. then after work, straight back again …
86321 1400 Euston – Crewe
40164 1611 Crewe – Holyhead
40056 2059 Holyhead – Crewe
86255 2344 Crewe – Willesden WN34 Signal via Bescot, Aston, Birmingham New Street
(2305 Manchester Piccadilly – Brighton)

Sunday 31/07/83
Having arrived at Preston behind a 40 on the dragging, it would be imbalanced not to leave the same way:
40093 (+85017 dead) 0440 Preston – Crewe via Golborne, Parkside, Castlefield, Piccadilly, Styal
Then an uncharacteristically desperate set of moves:
47463 0909 Crewe – Stafford
86209 0934 Stafford – Nuneaton
DMU Nuneaton – Leicester
43039 + 43096 1056 Leicester – Sheffield via Nottingham
47547 1310 Sheffield – York, via Nunnery, Attercliffe Jn., Shepcote Lane, Tinsley Yard, Treeton
The purpose of this strange set of moves was to pick up ex-works 50027 which was allocated to the 1125 York – Plymouth, and which was due to run via Leeds, then Tinsley, Toton, and Leicester. No, it didn’t work. I gave up and went home!

Tuesday 31/07/84
47704 1530 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk Grahamston, diverted due to the Polmont derailment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polmont_rail_accident
26010 1708 Edinburgh – North Queensferry
I believed there was a second 26 due to be operating vice DMU, so I alighted at North Queensferry to double back for it. From somewhere a DMU had been found, so I was wasting my time:
DMU North Queensferry – Dalmeny
DMU Dalmeny – Cardenden
26010 1839 Cardenden – Edinburgh
47711 2000 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk Grahamston

Wednesday 31/07/85
The Eurochildren Charter from Dover to Stranraer reached Carlisle, where the diagrammed Kingmoor locomotive was waiting to take it forward:
40122 0014 Carlisle – Stranraer
This was a healthy and very full load 12, the heaviest load I’d had with a 40 on the Stranraer line. On arrival at Stranraer I mentioned to the guard that I’d like to travel back on the ECS with him: no problem.
40122 0535 Stranraer – Edinburgh (ECS to Polmadie and Craigentinny) via Ayr, Shields Jn, Polmadie CS (detach 5 coaches), Shotts.
All that desperation in getting to Dover to join the train was worth it after all.
47716 1330 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street … and back to work!

Friday 31/07/87
I was living in a bedsit in Crewe whilst wife and son remained in Scotland until we could sell our flat. Travelling from Crewe to Glasgow isn’t as straightforward as you might think, when there are whistling distractions about:
40122 0800 Crewe – Cardiff
40122 1300 Cardiff – Crewe
At Crewe I made a minus connection into the 1225 Euston – Glasgow. That had set off from Euston behind 87001, but that had failed at Hemel Hempstead, and was rescued by 85003:
85003 (+87001 dead) 1520 Crewe – Preston
The 85 then also disgraced itself by failing at Preston! When the 1400 Euston – Glasgow pulled in (having departed Euston 95 minutes after 87001) I decided to jump ship:
87017 1712 Preston – Glasgow Central

Monday 31/07/89
The hot weather has taken its toll on the DMU fleet, and the Crewe – Derby service has been rescued from total collapse by borrowing some locos and stock:
31124 1447 Crewe – Stoke
20151 + 20210 1511 Stoke – Crewe
20129 + 20163 1547 Crewe – Stoke
86417 1657 Stoke – Stafford
90023 1805 Stafford – Euston

Saturday 31/07/93
Where once class 40s used to be the main attraction in North Wales (for me at least), nowadays its class 37s. The Holyhead overnight move hasn’t improved at all:
37421 0320 Holyhead – Birmingham New Street
A breakfast move, then:
86236 0648 Birmingham New Street – Birmingham International
37421 0725 Birmingham International – Crewe
87018 0946 Crewe – Wigan North Western
37418 1102 Wigan North Western – Bangor
37407 1359 Bangor – Manchester Victoria
31439 1648 Manchester Victoria – Lancaster via Bolton
87024 1822 Lancaster – Crewe

31st July 1982

With a Northumbrian Ranger in my pocket, I was able to have a couple of decent runs behind Class 40s on the Blackpool turns:

45036 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04
40060 Newcastle - York 1M66
40025 York - Newcastle 1E34
47544 Newcastle - Darlo 1V97
45060 Darlo - Newcastle 1S51

31st July 1983

The final day of my Freedom - a bit of an anti-climax:

47118 Perth - Queen St via Cumbernauld 1T04
47436 Glasgow C. - Carlisle 1V98
47436 Carlisle - Glasgow C. 1S41

I have not got the route noted, and can't remember, but I assume these journeys were via the GSW as the Edinburgh portion was then routed from Glasgow:

47709 Glasgow C. - Edinburgh via Shotts
HST home

At least I was able to do a bit of yellow-penning that day.

31st July 1985

Back to Syphons on DMU replacement turns this week and I even had the convenience of being able to leap at my local station:

37169 Hexham - Dunston 2E48

I finally realised what the strange numbers 404, 418 & 449 are/were. I ruled out steam but then thought they must be EMUs for a lot of today then I woke up to the fact they are class 50s with their original numbers. I keep forgetting the 50s were around in the D prefix era of numbering .

I struggle with the 5xxx numbers. I know that they are Type 2s, but whether they are 24, 25, 26 or 27 is a bit of a mystery.

5001 - 5150 = 24
5151 - 5299 and 7500 - 7677 = 25
5301 - 5346 = 26
5347 - 5415 = 27

That's the "simple" version. It all starts getting complicated if you start to include subclasses, particularly relevant to the class 25s, which didn't like working with other subclasses of class 25.

I guess I was expecting the 1105 Manchester – Holyhead to be a 40, but as the 47 was required I took it regardless.

I had decided to go for some sort of leap this weekend, but any idea of heading west to go to Newquay was scuppered by my inability to wake up and get out of bed. After doing very little all day, I made my way down to Kings Cross to see what fine selection of Peaks and Duffs would be turned out for the northbound overnights, which were diverted via Beattock. First up was 46026 on the 2000 to Aberdeen. Thanks, but no thanks. I stood at the north end of platform eight, willing for a 40 to appear off Finsbury Park. Eventually, a light engine did arrive. Another Sulzer, 47416 … but it is towing my machine – 40069 – which I didn’t even realise as in the area. 40069 was swiftly uncoupled, and shunted onto the 2100 to Edinburgh. That’s my overnight sorted then! I was a bit sceptical at the prospects of the loco working through, as on previous weekends there had been loco changes, mainly at Newcastle. Nevertheless, 40069 did work all the way through to Edinburgh, running via Stockton and Carlisle, load 9 from Kings Cross, detached a van at Stockton, and two more at Newcastle.
My machine was not in the peak of health, making quite heavy weather of the climb up Beattock even though it was only load 6 by then, but I was absolutely delighted!

After an overnight stay in the Crewe Arms Hotel, I emerged bright and early on this Sunday morning to get some rare track for 37s. My first train was a treat: double stamps bonus!
37418 + 37425 0753 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly via Chester triangle, Deansgate Jn, Stockport
Alighting at Piccadilly, I was surprised to find the 0955 Oxford Road to Llandudno was a class 31, as these were not exactly common on the North Wales Coast:
31421 0959 Manchester Piccadilly – Llandudno via Stockport, Deansgate Jn, Chester.
37421 1250 Llandudno – Stafford
87035 1517 Stafford – Crewe
37191 1614 Crewe – Liverpool Lime Street
87035 1745 Liverpool Lime Street – Crewe
37408 1859 Crewe – Birmingham New Street
47831 2007 Birmingham New Street – Reading
A very satisfactory day out.

That reads more like part of the itinerary of a Nedex, rather than a service train!

You certainly put a fair few overnights in, in search of haulage. Other than my weeks in Scotland and a couple of other trips I was always tucked up in bed.

You beat me to it with a very concise and succinct explanation....one small correction though - the 26s were numbered 5300-5346.

WEDNESDAY 1st AUGUST 1973:

Day three of my second Freedom of Scotland week and it was the the grand scenic trip:

5390 Helensburgh Upper-Fort William
5381 Fort William-Mallaig
5381 Mallaig-Fort William
5390 Fort William-Helensburgh Upper

Again, I'm afraid I don't have time to list all the locos seen - especially on the previous day at Carlisle - but if anyone is desperate to find out, feel free to message me and I can list them later in the week when I get back home to my PC.

Oh yes, I forgot that all classes started from zero, apart from the first Peaks which were 1 to 10.

I struggle with the 5xxx numbers. I know that they are Type 2s, but whether they are 24, 25, 26 or 27 is a bit of a mystery.
By the time i started my interest almost all locomotives had been renumbered into their classes.

Only big exceptions were the 45s (and maybe 46s ?) I saw at Brmingham New Street (late 1974 onwards) and the good old Westerns.

Thats a nice summary. I think I remember the 25s had different coupling codes and I know there were a lot of them built - 327 iirc ?. Of course I remember the 27s had three (?) subclasses which would have made rostering a bit more of a challenge - there were the two subclasses for the push-pull service Glasgow to/from Edinburgh. Maybe there were 5000 and 5300 ?.

Classes 31 and 37 also numbered 300 and a bit. So that is roughly 1000 locos just in 3 classes 25, 31 & 37. Then 08s numbered almost 1000. I think there were a lot more small locos than big locos ?. All that trip working and double heading !. Makes one think - how many locos are there nowadays compared to back in the day ?.

I did start drawing up a resume of locomotive classes and how they waxed and waned over the years. Not very accurate mind and it got a bit depressing.

A bit of a lack of forward planning with several classes, where they got to the end of the batch of available numbers and had to start again elsewhere for the remaining locos: 25, 37, 47.

Of course, we are seeing it again with the 66/7 subclass.

Starting a class with X000 dates back to steam days. It always struck me as a bit odd.
