That upper deck emergency exit door is rather unusual!
You might as well climb out of the open roof!

For that matter, why have an open topped bus where literally only the roof folds back, as the view out will be no better than on a normal double decker?

Ah yes so maybe as you say both the emergency exit and very high windowline are required - you can have no roof but you still need the side windows to be a certain height above the seats perhaps?

The upper deck emergency door must be a legal requirement in Japan, because here's a Routemaster in Japan with one:

Perhaps a British style open top would not be allowed in Japan. Here's an open top Neoplan Skyliner in Tokyo with upper deck windows and a bar running around the top:

That Routemaster is all emergency doors, though I doesn't seem to have impacted its seating inside too much!

Berlin has exercised options for 198 E500s from ADL following the delivery and evaluation of the 2 buses in the Autumn

The NFI press release says the order will be led by the Scarborough factory

The Berlin fleet will increase to 200 by end of 2020. Another 230 options exist within the framework contract

NFI Group Inc. (“NFI”), one of the world’s leading independent global bus manufacturers, today announced that Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (“BVG”) has exercised options for 198 Enviro500 double deck buses, to be delivered to the German capital by the end of 2022. Alexander Dennis Limited (“ADL”), a subsidiary of NFI, will build these buses in its factories in the United Kingdom.

NFI delivered the first two Enviro500 double deck buses to BVG in October 2020 as part of a multi-year framework contract signed in 2018. Following the successful completion of a testing programme with this initial pair of vehicles, BVG’s supervisory board approved the conversion of options for another 198 buses into firm orders, taking the fleet to 200. Options for an additional 230 Enviro500 double deck buses remain in the contract.

That's excellent news considering it was thought that they'd be built abroad. It makes sense in order to safeguard Scarborough in the light of significantly reduced domestic orders.

Indeed

As an aside it's interesting that a major European city like Berlin is still taking pure diesel buses, I don't think the E500 is even available as a hybrid, never mind in electric form

There were a couple of E500 hybrids built for Hong Kong, as per this image from JE2791 Photos, although it now appears to have been dropped as an option.

There is an E500EV marketed for the North American market.

They have been taking sizeable quantities of electric Citaros and Solaris.

BVG has apparently received some local criticism for taking new diesel double decks.

BVG also plan to introduce trolleybuses with batteries.

As Berlin’s public transport operator BVG is preparing to electrify its bus fleet until 2030, the partial installation of trolleybus overhead lines is planned for the trunk lines of the network in Spandau. Under the slogan “as much as necessary and as much as possible”, the partial electrification with catenary represents the economical optimum between re-charging infrastructure and batteries. The plan is that battery-hybrid-trolleybuses will run under catenary 50 – 65 % of the respective routes in order to re-charge the traction batteries. The rest of the line will be operated in battery mode.

Dundee are supposed to be getting 12, which were subject to the tender for London, Aberdeen, Dundee and Birmingham which Wrightbus won the double decker order, although I do not know if that is affected by the Wrightbus administration.

The official tender announcement for the hydrogen refuelling station, to be located at Michelin Scotland Innovation Park in Dundee, is now available and it specifically mentions :

  • design, build, commission, maintain and operate a hydrogen refuelling station on the Parc,
  • to generate and supply green hydrogen for a minimum of 12 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses and any additional clients within the period of the contract,
  • to provide a capital contribution for the installation and operations to enable hydrogen supply by early 2022.

So appears the 12 hydrogen buses in Dundee are going ahead with early 2022 start

Wrightbus celebrates landmark £8m Far East orders

The international arm of Northern Ireland bus-maker Wrightbus was today celebrating two landmark orders to produce a total of 45 buses for markets in the Far East from its factory in Malaysia.

Worth £8m, the low emission diesel buses will be destined for the streets of Hong Kong and Japan.

It marks a significant move for the Ballymena-based business, owned by green entrepreneur Jo Bamford, which sees the orders as an opportunity to grow the profile of the Wrightbus brand as far afield as Australia.

Chief Executive Buta Atwal said the news was proof that Wrightbus was leading the way in bus technology regardless of the fuel.

“Whether it’s our world-first hydrogen bus, our near-zero emission diesel or our single-deck electric, the Wrightbus name stands for excellence in the bus world,” he explained.

“Although we have endured a complicated year like so many manufacturers across the world, these orders will help us emerge from the pandemic with confidence.”

Wrightbus, which launched the world’s first zero-emission hydrogen double decker bus in 2020, recently announced the creation of 40 new jobs in preparation for increasing production of the vehicle this year to assist global net zero ambitions and support the PM’s pledge for at least 4,000 new Zero Emission Buses to be produced during this parliament.

The recruitment drive will welcome new members of production and office staff, including coachbuilders, spray painters, welders, electrical engineers, technicians, accountants, sales staff and a project manager. Nineteen of the positions will be apprenticeships, giving a boost to opportunities for young people in the region. And an international project engineer role has also been created as the firm looks to increase sales around the world.

Nathan Hodge, who heads the Wrightbus international division, said there was growing global optimism.

“While it hasn’t got to the tender stage yet, we are having some really good discussions in Australia about hydrogen buses,” he said.

“While Australia is seen by many to be among the leaders of hydrogen technology, there is only one hydrogen bus in the country so there’s a huge amount of potential.

“Countries like Malaysia, which exports oil, will always find the cost of hydrogen or electric buses prohibitive, yet that’s where our near-zero diesel comes in.”

Mr Hodge explained that the ASEAN free-trade agreement signed last year would ensure tariff-free movement of goods from the Wrightbus factory in Malaysia.

“Naturally having a factory in the Far East enables us to be part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) which provides tariff-free trade to the Southeast Asian Nations as well as Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.”

Will they be getting Streetlites, Streetairs, Streetdecks or Eclipse 3s?
AIUI they don't offer the Eclipse 3 or Gemini 3 anymore which was the Wright bodied Volvo based product.

The new single deck product is unnamed so far but unlikely to be called the Eclipse.

The recent open top Scanias for Japan were said by Wrightbus to have Gemini 3 bodies.

Pelican Announces KD Localization Cooperation Agreement with Yutong

https://pelicanyutong.co.uk/pelican-announces-kd-localization-cooperation-agreement-with-yutong/

Pelican becomes offical Yutong KD Plant to complete vehicles in the UK

With an ever increasing demand for UK parts and labour content in Yutong zero emission buses, Pelican Bus & Coach have reached a co-operation agreement with Yutong to be officially recognised as a KD plant operating on behalf of Yutong in the UK.

Vehicles will be delivered to Pelican for final completion. Items such as driver seats, passenger seats, fire suppression, stanchions, bell pushes, USB chargers, destination equipment’s, WIFI, radio, CCTV, passenger information systems and any other customer specific items will now be fitted at Pelican. In addition, vehicle and battery systems are commissioned locally together with an exhaustive pre delivery inspection. Pelican also conducts driver and engineer training at either customer’s premises or at Pelican resulting in local labour being upskilledwith the latest technology.

To accommodate the new KD operation, Pelican has purchased the former Ryder Trucks depot in Castleford and plans to refurbish and extend this property to suit. The 170 employees at Pelican will also be increased to reflect the ongoing business growth.

Vehicles will be completed in the UK by Pelican

As we already have well developed proposals to supply and deliver significant volumes of vehicles within 9 months of orders being placed, the vehicles will be completed in Yorkshire by Pelican.

Ian Downie, Head of Yutong Bus UK, commented:
The continued success of the Pelican brand in the UK with Yutong has been reflected in this agreement. Increased UK content, with local employment based not only in Castleford but also around the UK, reflects both the demands of our customers and our growing success in zero emission buses and coaches. It also benefits our coach customers who have been the bedrock of our business and we are currently carrying out PSVAR conversions at Castleford. Our vehicles now have a much greater level of UK sourced equipment being fitted in the UK. As more and more zero emission vehicles enter service, this provides more local employment to our suppliers and also to civil and electrical contractors as the supporting infrastructure is build and commissioned.
Richard Crump, Managing Director of Pelican, added:
Pelican is a UK company with a 102 year history of customer support. Our shareholding is 100% contained in the UK and we are proud to be supplying state of the art vehicles that allow local communities to benefit from zero emission transport on their streets. The £2m investment in new premises, staff and parts demonstrates our continued commitment to the UK economy and our local area.
