I am spotting on the Chiltern Main Line soon and I am wondering whether the 68 diagrams are still the same as Pre-Covid workings or are they currently altered, Thank You

Still just the one diagram (currently 1H22/1R23/1H47/1R51) at the moment and unfortunately not expected
to increase beyond four trains a day after next Monday despite Chiltern expanding their timetable somewhat.

Thank you for asking that question, I too, was thinking about having an awayday on the 68s from Marylebone to B'rum soon, but don't think it will happen for a while. Infact I could only see one of the above mentioned workings on the Chiltern Diagrams in this forum, the 1H22. I would normally go on the 1010 or 1110 from MYB, coming back from Moor Street at 1255, 1355 or 1555, Mon-Fri, but it does not look like these will run for the time being?

are the rest booked to be units?
That is certainly what would be implied if there is only one hauled diagram.

The only reason to use the hauled sets in normal times is for capacity. I'd imagine that the only reason to use them at the moment is to maintain traincrew competency.

Thank you for that, it looks like I could then get the 11.10 from MYB, have about an hour in Brum, just enough time to get a sarnie and come back on the 13.55. 68 both ways.

Perhaps worth mentioning that diagram 2 runs off to Wembley depot between 1H45 and 1K50, and sets are often swapped at that time, so maybe Diagram 2 should read 2A and 2B.

Still only one diagram. A diagram is the programme of a days planned work so in this case 2 x units may be allocated at different times through the day but still only one diagram

The day's programmed work might well be split into two separate diagrams, i.e.
1) 1H17 / 1R21 / 1H45 / 5H45 / Maintenance.
2) Maintenance / 5K50 / 1K50.
You would need to see the original paperwork to be sure.

You can't split a days work into 2 diagrams. 1 Diagram per day.

You miss understand how the railway diagrams rolling stock (and traincrew), a ‘diagram’ is how a block of work is allocated to either traincrew or rolling stock. Many operations have diagrams where that block of work doesn’t complete a full day.

Whilst diagrams can be stepped up in this case there are two booked loco hauled diagrams on Chiltern, one covers 3 trips and one covers 1 trip but they are still two separate diagrams. In the same way multiple drivers will cover those services - there is more than one traincrew diagram for example covering those 4 services.

There isn't sufficient time to carry out the necessary maintenance between 5H45 and 5K50 on a diagrammed basis, so the maintenance periods of the 2 diagrams overlaps.

I have been a diagrammer myself, diagramming both units and crews.

In which case you will understand cyclical diagramming requires a certain amount of time on depot for maintenance windows (which on some stock like IETs may be a specified amount of time on depot), that needs to be diagrammed as a block of work in the same way that passenger trains need to be diagrammed.

In the Chiltern case the diagrams are 3 trips then maintenance, with another diagram being maintenance then a single trip. There is insufficient time for the maintenance activity to occur between the 3rd and 4th passenger trip. That is why it is two diagrams and you will see different loco and stock covering the evening departure from Marylebone.

Whilst in many cases planned maintenance is carried out overnight that is not always the case.

I know. I think there is just a matter of interpretation. We can split the OPs post details into two separate diagrams instead of A & B
diagrams

It’s rarely a problem as the majority of stock usually cycles via its Home Depot, just with the reduced service the sets have to be somewhat forced to go onto Wembley!

Thank you for this, I am still planning a trip from London to Brum using the 68/loco hauled service, I shall wait until after 17 May and see how things are working out. (Can't wait to get on a proper train again.)
