As always, @Calthrop, well thought out but It's not Manchester Airport.

Keep with the 'grain' thought, and also it's not just a 'man' that we're talking about.

I'll try Rice Lane. I think Superman winged his way to Lois Lane to get his oats.

It's not Rice Lane. Again, thinking along the right lines.

The 'work' part of the clue is also relevant, in terms of where one would work (type of place, not location).

Riding Mill? You could both work in a mill and get your oats, and you may need to "wing it" by riding there.

This'll have to be my last shot ...

Kirkstall Forge? - a forge is a specialist factory, and a market stall could be an on-site store. A stall might also be a stable where you can get your oats, but I can't fathom the "wing it" unless it's reference to Captain Kirk winging his spacecraft across the universe.

Don't give up! You were far, far closer with your previous answer. Forget Star Trek.

Martin Mill?

And we have a winner.

Clue 1: To get his oats, this fellow needs to wing it to work - Martin (bird or male name) gets his oats from a Mill.
Clue 2: The on-site store for a specialist factory? - Mart-in-Mill (obviously).

@D6130 time for you to fly the nest. Well done.

Could this be Helensburgh Upper ?
It certainly is....well done!

Helensburgh was/is a late 18th century planned resort/dormitory town (hence the grid street pattern) developed by local landowner Sir James Colquhoun of Luss and named after his wife, Lady Helen.

Over to you!

Loppylugs has it - original clue was "bitterness" minus the "ss" and any birdwatcher knows the booming of a bittern!
