Or, taking another tack -- St. Johns ? The easternmost part of Newfoundland -- in which is situated the island's capital, St. John's -- is called the Avalon Peninsula... there's also a town on said peninsula, named Ferryland...

Rock Ferry is the correct answer - he's Bryan FERRY of the ROCK band Roxy Music. He sang Avalon, which is a mystical island, whereas Rock Ferry is on the very real Wirral Peninsula.

So Perryman has it.

Or maybe Worthing. Bedford has a station called St John's, and there is a plant called St John's wort, which may or not be akin to mint. There is also a spice called hing, also named asafoetidia, or foetid earth, a possible description of dung after it has sat on th he ground a while.

It's an anagram, it's in South-West territory and nowhere near Bedford. A whole 22 letters.
