reliving my childhood from the 1970s and I have read that when D1062 Western Courier was taken inside the works at Swindon in 1976 to commence it's restoration, that D1068 which by chance failed at Swindon, was placed on the works turntable as it's replacement - until such time as D1015 Western Champion was swapped and spent time on the turntable. I've read that the works manager wasn't impressed that a Crewe built locomotive had pride of place so this was soon rectified.

Does anyone know the from and to dates that D1068 spent on the works turntable?

Hi EJ1, thanks for responding.

The article here about D1015's preservation tells more. It seems that 1068 might have been withdrawn from LA depot but it failed on a working in 1976 close to Swindon works. It sounds like it went straight to the works and not via it's home.

I also have the BRDbase link as well as this one which documents works arrival dates as well as withdrawal and scrpaiing dates. Beware though, there are published errors I believe - good example is that you will find many photographs showing 1034 Western Dragoon way beyond the date it is recorded as going to scrap!

There is also an image on Flickr showing a poorly painted 1068 at Swindon where it had been displayed in lieu of 1062 - if dates are correct this was taken on 26th October 1977 which is after it's published scrapping date on BR Dbase. I accept the date on the photgraph could be wrong and maybe was taken on this date in 1976?

Hi Rob,

I am no Western expert but thought the following may be of help.

Flickr is a good resource and here are two more links.

The first features D1068 in the Workshop at Swindon dated March 1977
http://www.flickr.com/photos/16179216@N07/6506886549/in/set-72157629468865245

The second dated 09.06.77 shows the Loco in the scrap lines

I have looked at the two photographs of D1068 on Wharferat's Flickr photostream, which I think your photograph posted here was extracted from - both seem to be dated 26.10.76.

You may find the WR Diesel Hydraulic Discussion Group to be helpful. Its membership is populated by many Western specialists and I would be surprised if you can't find the answer to your query there.

Here's the link
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/WRDHL/

The group is moderated and you will need to apply to join. I had no difficulty in doing so and enjoy the various discussions that crop up from time to time, although I don't contribute/post.

Hope this helps.

thank you Kevin - much appreciated.

You are right about 1068 - it's repaint in BR blue was for replacing 1062 on turntable but this was in October 1976 and not 1977.

Well, according to BRdatabase, she was withdrawn at Laira on 12th October 1976 and scrapped at Swindon on 31st August 1977.

THere's no mention there about how long she was at Swindon before being scrapped. Here's a link to the relevant site:

http://www.brdatabase.info/locoqry.php?action=locodata&id=1068&type=D&loco=D1068

:)

BRDatabase doesn't say that D1068 was withdrawn *at* Laira, but that it was a Laira locomotive when it was withdrawn. As someone else has rightly said, D1068 failed at Swindon station and never made it back to Devon. Maybe I need to correct the wording ...

Also, my original source data for scrappings was by month end - I am gradually trying to improve upon the accuracy of the data. D1068 must have been scrapped *during* August 1977.

The scrap dates of several Westerns have been incorrectly published over the years. I intend correcting them as and when I can, and clearly that of D1034 is incorrect on BRDatabase as there is plenty of photographic proof that it survived into 1978.
