It might actually cost more than the Flying Scotsman. The technology involved in a steam engine is well understood and the parts are relatively easily made in a well-equipped metal workshop. The APT probably used electronic components that haven't been made in 30 years and which would be very hard to reproduce in the small quantities required.

Woudn't be allowed anyway. It's akin to getting the Concorde prototype out of the FAA (Fleet Air Arm) museum at Yeovilton and getting it flying again.

A diesel/electric multiple unit would generally consist of passenger-carrying carriages that have within them all the necessary components to provide traction (ie, no locomotive required).

This is as opposed to trailer carriages that are typically hauled/propelled by a locomotive.

Out of interest, why do people refer to class 153's as "DMU"s when they are usually run as single vehicles?

Surely they should be referred to as "DU"s unless coupled to another set?

Just call them by their more common nickname "Dogboxes" and you won't go wrong then.

But they're not "usually" run as single units, any more than any other units!
