But then that doesn’t cover where trains are short formed or long-formed, as many operators are doing. By that measure Cross Country are at around 60%. By vehicle miles they are at around 90%.

But if you go to vehicle miles, TPE and actually over 100%. c2c were at something like 140% over the summer.

No easy answer.
Interestingly enough South West Trains and now South Western Railway would talk about running additional services to the Saturday timetable over the Christmas holidays.

As far as I could tell, on the Poermsourh line at least, these would just be existing services extended further down the line. So maybe starting at Petersfield instead of Haslemere. I can't remeber the exact examples so I've made one up. You get the idea though.

I'd always think of additional services in terms of additional trains but that isn't always the case.

Reports have it that on Mondays to Saturdays, Central Rivers depot is almost empty. Sundays it's almost like Christmas and Boxing Day. So the 90% of vehicle miles is plausible except Sundays.

Confimed on both websites
1. Southeastern
2. Chiltern railways
That from Monday the 16th November due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown situation .about service changes, alterations and cutbacks.
Maybe these might also go further and beyond the December 2020 timetable affecting the services off these operators as well. ?

I have tried to book several seats during December on LNER but have not been able to get anything on their "fasts". Has anyone heard if they are planning to cut these services. I was able to book on the slower services.

Is it possible that this is delberate to prevent longer distance services being filled with folk only going to York?

I have just been informed that from Monday the first Aberdeen to London has been cancelled along with some other LNER services.

Restricting York passengers to one train every two hours seems a little harsh.

I see the December Greater Anglia timetables for December have landed on their website.

Some have a note attached.

Please Note
Great Northern services (GN) are subject to change from 24 April 2021
This timetable will be re-issued once the changes to the Great Northern services have been confirmed

What's that about? Something to do with the Kings Cross works?

Has the Avanti timetable been confirmed for December yet? I'm asking as currently sites such as realtimetrains are not showing an Rugby calls after 08:46. The current timetable now has the XX:30 from New Street calling additionally at Rugby but not after the timetable change.

I would *guess* that the full (9tph) timetable was bid, but it's now being amended post-offer to reflect the 6tph reduced timetable.

Is the right answer. Will be close to the wire before being published.

The xx30 off New Street will continue to call at Rugby from December.

16:10 Euston-Bangor

20:20 Bangor-Birmingham New Street

Saturdays:
05:30 Birmingham New Street-Holyhead
09:10 Euston-Holyhead
11:10 Euston-Chester
14:10 Euston-Holyhead
17:10 Euston-Holyhead (Detaches a set at Chester)

06:52 Holyhead-Euston

The Avanti timetable beyond 13 Dec is being changed at short notice, to reflec something very close to what is operating now. It won’t be published for another couple of weeks.

I did refer to that likelihood at the bottom!

The question would be whether the revised timetable actually offers meaningful connections at Crewe to/from London. At present the shuttles don't do that.

That’s actually quite reminiscent of the level of service provided in the late 1980s / early 1990s, with clusters of trains each way around the ‘peaks’ which were based around the Irish ferries at Holyhead, with a couple of daytime infill workings. It was cut back down to about 3tpd each way in the early 1990s recession and remained like that until the Virgin VHF timetable.

Note - just to add, this was before the hourly Crewe-Bangor semi-fast services (with 37s) was introduced so it formed the core of the N Wales Coast timetable, along with stopping trains between Manchester and Llandudno.

The SE December 2020 TT has been taken down now whilst they re-upload something more similar to the service from Last Monday.

Avanti and their predecessor Virgin have run to Holyhead for more years that I can remember.

I think Virgin always ran a few trains every day to Holyhead and since around 10 years ago they've run a train every hour to Chester, which includes the Holyhead services.

The direct “Intercity” service between London and Holyhead, has existed since the mid-1800s.

It really isn’t anything new.
