Heard this on travel reports that the line between Edinburgh and Aberdeen near Leuchars is shut for track safety inspections.
Due to a sinkhole in the track.
Not seen any mention on here despite various searches.

It's in the news, with a picture of a big hole.

Train services between Aberdeen and Edinburgh have been suspended due to a sinkhole on the line north of Leuchars.

Network Rail said that ballast stones had subsided as a result and engineers need to assess the depth of the subsidence.

ScotRail said services between Edinburgh and Perth, Kirkcaldy, and Glenrothes were unaffected.

The rail operator said it had secured replacement buses running from Dundee and Aberdeen.

Not sure why buses are operating between Dundee and Aberdeen. Surely it should be between Dundee and Kirkcaldy? Also shouldn't services be diverting between Ladybank and Dundee via Perth?

There is simply no capacity on the single line between Ladybank and Hilton Junction. There is a theoretical maximum of 3tph, and 2tph are already occupied by the Edinburgh - Perth/Inverness services. The way those are spaced means that the theoretical 3rd train per hour can't run.

Must work at certain times otherwise the Highland Chieftain wouldn't fit when its diverted this way vice its usual route via Falkirk. I guess also it maybe managed on the day by signallers (with delays) to get extra trains through as it will be easier to source than buses.

That doesn't undermine the fact that you've got 2tph (plus more in the peaks) in each direction, and only half a path per hour (in each direction) to fit them in.

It says FROM Dundee and Aberdeen, which suggests both are headed for south of the block. Presumably there are some Aberdeen services that can't be covered by the Glasgow trains.

How would that hole be spotted? First train of the day might be going too quick to stop after seeing it?
