There’s so many to choose from! While this probably goes against the grain of the bashers of the 70s and 80s, I, at my younger age, have a particular fondness for the 37/4s. If I had to choose one then I might well select 37404 – It was one of the first 37/4s I saw, and it is synonymous with the many sightings I had of these locos on the West Highland line in Transrail days that I enjoyed so much.

My favourite will always be 37109. I had her on a Railtour & she was quite loud. Also, for my 40th Birthday I did a Driver Experience course on the ELR.

37126.
I think it was allocated off Tinsley when I had it first in about 1978 Birmingham - Sheffield on some holiday extra. Nine on, an went like poo offa shovel, with LOTS of noise.
Had it a few times after that: always good for a riot. Kept an eye on it ever since. Happily its now 37676. After a close scrape a few years ago where it was apparantly de fueled somewhere in South Wales for tripping to Kingsbury for breaking its now still at work. Long may it carry on. its an absolute beast.

Guess!

The reason - my fastest ever trip through the tunnel, just under 2 mins 59 secs for the 4 miles 628 yds.
Full thrash all the way down through Pilning, eased off slightly for the bend at the Bristol end of the tunnel, then full thrash all the way through to STJ.

I wonder what my favourite 37 could be? ;)

37372 along with 37408 were the first 37s I had for haulage as a 12yr old back in 2004. Turned up in Leeds that morning to find a blue tractor in the platform, completely withered me! I was hooked and 8 years on I've had over 50 more of them.

It has nothing to do with the Baby Deltic Project, although I feel priviledged that it was rescued from Kingsbury and will one day run again; albeit somewhat different...

Only problem, there's 309 of them to choose from. Which 308 locos do I leave out ?

Travelled past Dollands Moor on Thursday morning and there were 6(?) there. What's the story with them?

They have recently been returned from Spain where they have been involved in infrastructure work building a new high speed line over the past ten years, although several of them at least have been out of use for a few years already.

The Class 58 Loco Group provides some more details:

I like them all, but if I was to pick a couple of favourites.

I always liked 37408 which was a much liked 37 with a lot of people. It was the last 37/4 in BR Large Logo blue, (before 425 got its special repaint) and there was upset when EWS said it was going to be painted into EWS livery, but there was an even bigger uproar when they said it was going to have its Loch Rannoch nameplate replaced by 'Rail Celebrity'. It did recieve EWS, but the names stayed and the plates went on 37417 instead.

I had a soft spot for 37012, it been the 1st unrefurbished 37 i had on the mainline when it rolled into Bangor on top of 37415 (eth only) on a mega-delayed Holyhead-New Street on Christmas Eve 1998.

Not to state the obvious but................... 37078 .
16/09/1983 on the 1E22 12:46 Portsmouth - Leeds from Birmingham, as a 13 year old spotter this was a massive loco and too good an opportunity to pass up and so a return to Derby was purchased..............oh those were the days!!! :D

I remember having 37025 in a pair with 31255 up Shap & Beattock on a A1A Charter, 025 was nicely flame throwing.

37 430 Cwmbrân back in the early 90s when it was painted in InterCity livery and used to appear regularly on the Cambrian Coast Express between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. As a schoolboy I'd try and photograph it on Sunday afternoons as it headed through Meole Brace.

37128 was another favourite of mine, working a Blackpool North to Liverpool Lime Street service, quite loud.

37152 was quite a loud loco, had her on a Glasgow Queen Street Low Level to Oban service.

37289 has been a favourite of mine, it was on on the Scarboro-Newcastle, one summer, the driver just opened it up and thrashed it out of Sunderland Station, being underground it sounded truly awesome, everytime i saw it, it always brought back that memory.

37 188 was a really nice example when it came to Scotland in the early 80s. Great thrash without the clag and failures of 175 amongst others at the time!

37 264 was also another anti clagger which was minted in 1983/4. With Big logo and grey roof it took over as fav'

Of the original 37 014 for some reason was a beast compared to 012, 017, 025 and 028 all at ED then. The infamous Peter Walker once made up an hour delay between Tyndrum upper and Dumbarton with ETHEL on the euston Bedz- that was a 350 tonne train being thrashed like heck up the arrochar bank! At dumbarton he was about 3 minutes down, so what did he do ? Yep, notch 8, overload, notch 8 again.....
