As reported by the national broadcaster YLE to cope with Christmas demand:
”Superjuna” lähti matkaan – katso video Suomen suurimmasta matkustajajunasta
http://yle.fi/uutiset/3-9372102
"Supertrain" has left on its journey - Watch video of Finland's biggest passenger train.
Basically, this is the highest number of passengers on a train in Finland's peace time. Typically this service normally carries around 850 passengers, though earlier Christmasses has seen 1200 pax.
It seem that after last years cut of services and price rises VR has seen sense and reinstated many services and lowered prices ... resulting in (surprise!) more passengers and profitability...
This report has a nice infographic: http://yle.fi/uutiset/3-9369043 - in summary:
1 Sr2 Locomotive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VR_Class_Sr2
15 doubledeck wagons, 416m long
2 restaurant cars, 2 wagons with invalid services and children's play areas
1500 passengers, 28 toilets
Leaves Helsinki 15h27, driver change in Seinäjoki 18h04 and in Oulu at 20h52. Arrives Rovaniemi 23h34
500 cups of coffee, 200 beers, 200 hot food portions (probably meatballs), 250 sandwiches serves
5 servers, 5 conductors (beat that Southern!)
20 animal places (large dogs)
22000 kWh of electricity used in the entire journey = consumption of an average house for 1 year.
t., and Merry Christmas.
Ian
ps: Good news from the frozen north, Santa leaves in a few hours - visits Finland first tomorrow then the rest of the World (if you've been good)
