Thought it's about time a thread was made for First Aberdeen rather than blocking up the main FirstGroup one!

This thread is for posting all fleet, service and general news updates regarding First Aberdeen and King Coaches, additionally updates regarding preserved Aberdeen vehicles may be included. This thread is also a place for discussing the operations of First Aberdeen and it's predecessors Grampian Regional Transport & Aberdeen Corporation Transport.

Latest Fleet List: January 2020 (Update coming soon...)

Seperate post

The service registrations for the new changes on the 29th of July have started to go through. There's nothing that really stands out other than the new variations 3A and 31 of the Thistle Line 3 and the re-registration of the 21A/21B/21C to accommodate the new Lochside Academy, with the 21C being axed as it would be a bit pointless once the move has happened.

The 3 (3A, 3G, 31) registration strangely also now contains Altens as a via point, perhaps the 3A will be a variation that goes via Altens. The 31 is most likely the School service via Torry.

No sign of that new number 4?

Not yet, i'd suspect if it does go ahead it will be in the mass changes that are expected to happen next year once AWPR opens. For all we know the 31 could be the 4 though. It's not uncommon for service registrations to miss out the final destination of a service. The new 3 registration misses out Gateway Business Park where the 3G terminates for example.

Full info should really be on the Website in the next week or so seeing as the changes are at the end of July.

Not all the new Lochside Academy school bus services have been registered. Presumably more buses will be needed, unless other changes will free up buses for when the universities return. Seatbelted buses will be needed, unless they are intending to use the existing coaches for the services below. Also, it appears the 18 will also be serving the new school and this change is not yet registered.

https://committees.aberdeencity.gov.uk/documents/s83581/Subsidised Transport and Safe Walking Routes to Lochside Academy.pdf

3.3.4 The Leggart/Balnagask will operate school term time only and will be operated by First Aberdeen utilising 4 high capacity buses, with up to two of the buses operating via Leggart, with pupils using a bus pass provided by the Council to access the service. As the service will operating at school times only, the bus pass provided will also provide access to the First Aberdeen service 3 and 18 between the hours of 07:00 – 18:00, Monday to Friday, during school term time only, for pupils to attend any extra-curricular activities.

3.3.5 The Leggart/Balnagask Service operates the following route, in both directions:  Service 22a - Leggart Terrace, Great Southern Road, West Tullos Road, Abbotswell Road, Wellington Road, Girdleness Road, Balnagask Road, Balnagask Circle, Girdleness Road, Wellington Road, Wellington Circle, Lochside Academy.  Service 22b AM only - Balnagask Circle, Girdleness Road, Wellington Road, Wellington Circle, Lochside Academy.  Service 22c - Victoria Road (at Mansefield Road), St Fitticks Road, Balnagask Road, Wellington Road, Wellington Circle, Lochside Academy.

I think there's still quite a number of changes to go through. They'll probably need a PVR increase come September time regardless. If the 22A/22B/22C need high capacity buses then those would most likely be Enviro500s or Geminis.

The new timetables from the 29th of July are now up, Click here

A basic rundown of the changes is as follows...
Thistle Line 3/3A/3G/31
The 3 and 3G have a number of timetables changes and there is lots of variations where only particular journeys operate so that the service can adjust around school times.
The NEW 3A is just one southbound weekday journey that goes via Altens and the Coast Road.
The NEW 31 is a 3 that runs via Torry and Lochside Academy twice per day each way.

Service 8/8A
8 has minor timetable alterations with journeys being pushed back by up to 5 minutes, sections of the route have also been re-timed to improve reliability. 8A remains unchanged.

Orange Line 11
11 again has minor timetable alterations, some journey times adjusted.

Platinum 12(/121)
There's variation of the 12 numbered 121, the timetable does list it and there is variations of when certain 12s operate, but i can't seem to find the 121 on the actual timetable! Other than that it's just minor timetable alterations.

Platinum 13
The 13 has no visible changes, even though a registration did go through the TC.

Northern Lights 17/17A/17B/18A
Morning buses from FauldsGate are improved.
The first 17B from Fourmile no longer operates, with the outbound services starting slightly later
Sunday timetable on the Northern Lights goes back to the full FauldsGate - Dyce 17A and back to the pre April Frequency of every 20 minutes.

Northern Lights 18/181/182/183
Times for the NEW 181, 182 & 183 are included in the timetable for the 18. The 18 has some differing variations depending on what days services operate, although it appears there is an extra peak run on Mondays/Tuesdays. One AM peak service via Altens has been amended to operate as a 182, hence the creation of the 3A

Platinum 19
Minor timetable alterations

Service 21A/21B
Service 21C withdrawn.
Routes and times of 21A/21B altered.

NEW Service 22A/22B/22C
4 Journeys on school days each way.

Services 1/1A/2, 15, 16B, 20/40, 23, 62, 117 & 419 remain unchanged

It appears the 11 no longer interworks with the 13 in the evening. But the 13 doesn't have anything else to Interwork with meaning buses could have a 36 minute layover at Scatterburn, considering the whole reason the 11 and 13 interwork was to stop buses spending excessive time at Scatterburn as there's a history of buses being used as target practice in the evening. It does seem very strange. I was thinking the 13 may interwork with the 12 or 23 instead now, but this wouldn't work out.

Does anyone know what has happened to 23501 Levante? I saw it being towed up to King Street. Does anyone know what happened/where it was coming from?

Just a few fleet movements. In the past Month.

10159: To Summer Reserve
23501: Reregistered from FJ56OBO to W2FAL
23502: Reregistered from FJ56PFG to W4FAL
38220: Long Term repair at Caledonia to Aberdeen
61230: First Scotland East to First Aberdeen (Training)
62150: To Summer Reserve
62181: To Summer Reserve
65743: Loan to First Scotland East (Larbert)
69263: First Scotland East to First Aberdeen

Note that 10167 which has been in storage at Livingston since November 2017 has been moved to the workshop and is getting it's paint tidied up, i presume it along with possibly a few others may return to Aberdeen for September when the Universities come back in to session.

Full fleet list as of 18/07/18 (compiled by myself) can be viewed here. (Onedrive link)

Thanks for the list Jordan but one query is that I thought B12 20506 was long gone.

Thanks for pointing that out to me! Indeed it went a while back, although it left after 20505/07 which may be why i forgot to remove it. I've amended that error now!

I get "This item might not exist or is no longer available" when I click on that link.
Strange... I'll look in to it now and get back to you!

Edit: I've checked the link and it seems fine, so i'm not sure why it's not working for you. I've ticked the "allow editing" box so perhaps if you try now it may work?

Thanks. I think the issue is with my own OneDrive account. I've not used it for so long that it has been disabled, and despite re-activating the account, the link still doesn't work normally. However, if I open it up in a private browsing session, it's fine. It says to give it up to 24 hours to go through the process.

I have to say that I'm quite surprised that a few of the X and Y plate Volvo B10Bs are still on the go - these were coming into service just before I left Aberdeen, and that wisna yesterday! Are they still in reasonable condition? And another thing that puzzles me - is there any logic to the 5-digit numbering system that First use? (and Stagecoach for that matter).

Ahh, that explains i then!

All the B10s bar 1 are on the road (Note 62150 and 62181 are just in summer reserve which means they will return to service in September). Generally they're in good condition. In the past 10 months they've all had their interiors retrimmed and 62163/64/65/66/67/69 & 78 have been repainted. Still easily the most liked by drivers and the most reliable buses in the fleet here.

The First numbering system was originally allocated based on area (62xxx being a number for Aberdeen and Scotland East), but around 2005/6 it was changed so that numbers were allocated based on type, and it's been that way ever since. The Stagecoach system is far more consistent as they've done it based on type since day 1.

But yes it's mad to think the full 2001 batch of B10BLEs for Aberdeen is still here. All of them have spent all their life here excluding 62164/69 who spent 2 weeks down in Edinburgh in 2012.

Here's a video of 62155 earlier this year proving she still has no issue getting up to impressive speeds.
Do note this video was just a few weeks before her interior was done up.

Safe to say 17 years on they've really stood the test of time and should be credited on their continued reliability. With luck they've still got a little while yet!

What happened to the ALX300 batch that were shipped north - W-reg with Edinburgh index marks, if I remember rightly? The Mercs and Scanias disappeared round about the same time.

I thought they'd originally come from Edinburgh given their registration marks, but it would appear that they did actually come up from Glasgow - it was the W-RFS batch. I assume they were trying to standardise on one vehicle type at the time.

@Mwanesh - thanks for that list

While your list is mostly accurate...
13xxx is Volvo B5LH
16xxx actually has more East Lancs bodied Volvos than Wright bodied examples
20xxx is for B10Ms
21xxx is for any low floor Volvo
22xxx is for all MANs
24xxx is a overflow for MAN E300s
27xxx also includes some Dennis Javelins
52xxx would more really count as B10Ms seeing as there's quite a significant number of Jonckheere bodied examples in that number range.
538xxx and 548XX are for B11R 6X2 Elites

I'm sure there's other variations in there i've forgotten about, anyway this is heavily off topic!

The W-RFS batch of ALX300 bodied B10BLEs started life in Glasgow, it should be noted now that W606RFS was involved in a RTC on delivered so was sent back to Falkirk for repair and then delivered in September 2000, due to this it's plate had to be changed to X606RFS.

The full batch of 30 moved to Aberdeen at the start of 2001, when they were transferred they gained the 3 digit 8xx series fleet numbers, being allocated 801 to 830. Of those 801 to 807 were allocated to Park & Ride duties. In 2003 when the 5 digit fleet numbering system came along they were allocated the typical 62xxx numbers, but there appears to be no consistency here at all and they are a bit all over the place. As such i've put a full list of the renumbering in the "quote" at the bottom!

In 2006 62173 was demoted from Park & Ride duties, with 62170/71/72/74/75/76 being repainted in to the Blue Express livery, then in 2009 all 6 P&R examples were fitted with WIFI with 62170/72/74/75 being repainted in to a white Express livery.

In 2013 all the ALX300s excluding the first 7 (62170 - 76) were replaced by a batch of 23 Enviro300s, the displaced ALX300s mostly went to Scotland East but examples did eventually end up as far away as Bristol. 62173 was converted to a Driver trainer and 62170/71/72/74/75/76 retained on Park & Ride duties, later that year they got the interiors retrimed and 62170/71/75/76 were repainted in a revised P&R livery, this time a pink version of Olympia. At the end of 2015 all the remaining ALX300s at Aberdeen were withdrawn due to them not being PSVAR compliant.

Currently the following remain.
62189 at Cymru (Driver trainer)
62190 at Caledonia, Glasgow (Withdrawn)
62208 at Cymru (Driver trainer)
62210 at Hoeford, Hampshire (Driver trainer)
62219 at York (Driver trainer)
62221 at Cymru (Driver trainer)
62225 at Hoeford, Hampshire (Driver trainer)
All carry variations of the Olympia Livery. I don't think i've missed any out!

Thanks, it has been helpful. Brings back memories of my last few years in the Granite City, before I moved back here to DartLand :)

Well i'll keep my opinion on Darts reserved....

If i'm not mistaken the reason they got Edinburgh marks was because they were registered at the factory rather than in Glasgow.

One of the T reg Scanias new in 1999 for the route 12 and 22, number 566 (T566BSS) later 60220 is now preserved by First Group Heritage Trust and is at King Street Depot undergoing restoration.

69254: First Scotland East, Larbert to First Aberdeen (26/07/18).

I've been informed 3 of the Artics at Livingston are ready to be transferred. Where the heck they're going is another question though, Bristol is being time and time again rumoured, but this makes no logical sense and i doubt it would happen. We'll have to wait and see!
