Has anyone any information as to the date of the opening of this line and the reason why it was constructed. I have a feeling that it was a goods-only line.
Looking at the LNER.info site there is a post there mentioning an 1879 opening and was built to serve the various mills in the area. Seems like a reasonable date.
This site linked from there has a couple of pictures of the line and the workings. All interesting stuff, love the picture of the ad promoting "Beer".
The rough route of what is left of the line is visible (Just !!) on Google Earth but some bits have been obliterated.

Thank you for this link and for access to the LNER website. It has not been the easiest branch line to research in terms of available information, but there is more than enough now to go on, especially with regards to the mill owners of the area.
