Wonder how Great Northern will manage in the interim, given that these units were intended to replace the 365s.

Perhaps some 365s will return to service, I’d be very happy if that was the case! However, there are 27 GX 387s - so possibly just another six will transfer to GN (unless the others are being used elsewhere).

365s are no longer on the books so will definitely not be returning to service. Some extra GX 387s will be coming up from the south to cover for the ones going to GWR.

First 379s shouldn’t be too far off, losing six units for summer holidays doesn’t sound insurmountable even if they are currently diagrammed which is unlikely given GTR service reductions.

Mostly due to the Gatwick Express not running. A shuffle has taken place and some VIC-BTN services that were 387 this week will be 377 next week to allow the cascades

Were some not leant initially when the cracks first came about?

GWR already have 3x c2c units on their books for the foreseeable to free up 387s for IET work (301/302/306) - the c2c units are quite restricted on what they can do due to some SDO hardware differences to the GWR sets; so they’ll only normally be found working alone on Newburys. They can theoretically turn up in the middle of 12 cars too, but haven’t needed to do that yet.

The 6x GX sets (on paper at least) are fully compatible with their younger GWR siblings, so will in theory be common use, as the GX ones are at GN at the moment. It isn’t however immediately clear what work they will be employed on, the prevailing thoughts being enabling further timetable uplift without needing more IETs - so further Bristol Parkway / Swindon workings, although 387 crew route knowledge is very limited out beyond Swindon, and not great to Swindon.

There are 3 that were borrowed from c2c, these are on top as I understand.

Thank you both

Wonder if they will venture through the tunnel at some point? There is 387 signage on Cardiff station. Been there a while.

At some point they will.

At present there are no drivers that sign both route and traction to do so, that may change in the short to medium term.

There was a plan to take a 387 to Cardiff sometime this month so hopefully we might see some progress

Seems odd GWR getting the Hornsey 6, and Hornsey getting six others. There must be a reason for GWR not having units straight from Gatwick Express?

Think it’s to do with bedding in AC mileage - the majority of the GX units have not run on AC since commissioning

My understanding is the 6 x 387s that we’re transferred to GN will head west (387 201-206) and then only 3 x 387s will replace them on the GN (ex Gatwick Express). The GN timetable seemingly did not need all 6, only 3.

I did wonder why 387204-206 had been sitting in Hornsey ever since they transferred over!

Since the 365s ended another peak extra has been removed (the 07:22 from Stevenage no longer runs)

The 3 x 387’s are now currently en route to Hornsey running as 5Y87

Reported today that 387207/08/09 are now at Hornsey.
Interesting that the ’red’ 387s chosen for Great Northern (and onwards to GWR) have all been sequential from 201, rather than any random order.
