Thanks for the info mate. According to wikipedia, all 387/1s are now loaned to GWR so it must have moved back.
/1 allocations haven’t changed, Great Northern still has their fleet of 29. It’s GX /2s and c2c /3s that are on loan.

I caught another red set passing me (out of he corner of my eye, as one does) at Hayes with a green one as 2P42 (Didcot to Paddington semi fast) and will presumably return later as 2N36 leaving Paddington 1327. Don't know what sets were involved though.

Most likely 8 of the 12 car described above; which would make it 7203 and 7153

387203 is having what looks like it’s maiden day in service with GWR, paired with 387153 for the day:

0726 PAD-DID 0852 2N12 included in rear eight detached at Reading

0831 RDG-PAD 0910 1P82

0920 PAD-DID 1052 2N20

1108 DID-PAD 1230 2P42 (which I saw)

1327 PAD-DID 1451 2N36

1327 PAD-DID 1451 2N36

7203 first worked for GWR on Thursday 29th July on Newburys

Today was however first day of red fleet “mingling” with green sets, with both 7201 and 7203 out attached to green sets most of the day.

Gatwick Express are a big fan of "The Brand", which is why all the SN services using GX Coaches are advertised as such and the OBS' announce it as so.
Thats why i dont understand why the stock they have on GX is uncomfortable metro style stock if they are so obsessed with the Brand. I doubt many who get on GX find it great or memorable. Seem to be priorities all wrong Anyway..i digress as usual..

387203 is working one half of the Bristol Parkway diagram today, starting with 9U44:

9U44 0712 PAD-BPW
9L43 1019 BPW-PAD
9U54 1212 PAD-BPW
9L53 1510 BPW-PAD
9U66 1712 PAD-BPW

Ah to replace an IET set?

Lot of cancellations out of Wales this morning due to a Landslip, so 387s step up to the plate. Annoyed it couldn’t have started further west but all too late in the day to organise it.

Are the 6 red 387's seeing regular service? I travel between Reading to Didcot 2 times per week now and regularly see 3 red units parked up in the sidings at Reading at 9.30am. I'm assuming they're more for back-up use.

Some seem to be in service every day, with a pair together Paddington - Newbury one day last week. There are lots of other (green too) units parked at Reading depot (and West Ealing) sidings off peak and weekends but most sets venture out for peak hour services.

Current diagrams call for:-

10/12 HEx sets
31/33 Green sets
4/6 Red sets
2/3 White sets

Red and Green are completely interchangeable so most days you’ll see more than 4 reds out to allow the maintenance teams to catch up on the pile of work on the green ones that is being built up with their heavier use covering for IETs on Bedwyns (as far as Newbury) and Bristol Parkways.

The whites pretty much have to stick to diagram due to their more restricted use (detailed previously), and only the HEx sets can do HEx work and they can only do HEx work - no cheeky covering a Reading stopper in a pinch.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Regarding the red 387s, did these already have a pantograph installed before working Gatwick Express, even though that is third rail?

I do know that the white 387s (101-129) were dual voltage from the outset as they worked Thameslink duties before the 319s were withdrawn.

Also, did the green 387s (130-174) have the capability of the shoegear being installed if need be, or were they designed for AC overhead use only?

All 387s were delivered with both pantograph and shoegear. the only real amendment to this was the /3s which had a different pantograph to the rest of the fleet, the same as fitted to the 357’s

As far as I know the pantograph is the same it’s just the pantograph head which is different

Was on a red 387 yesterday. A change to have red ironing boards I suppose!

So I’m on the 9:13 service to Newbury this morning.

it’s a Class 387 GWR service with Southern interior and C2C route maps.

Love it.

387201 has made it to Cardiff on a crew training run. First red one into Wales?

Was in Cardiff again today (21/10) with 387 201 on the London End

As it’s a self-contained diagram for the driver trainer; it will likely remain as the same 8 car until one or other of the units actually needs to return to Reading for heavy maintenance - as happened with 387170 previously.

Until further notice; one of the units in the pair will always be from the pool of 387142-387145 as they are fitted with special OLE monitoring equipment.

Red /2s apparently returning from December with c2c /3s remaining with GW for the time being.

So is the reverse cascade?

387/2s from GWR return to GN/SN
387/1 from GWR to cover for cracked 800/802 on some Paddington to Cardiff services
7-car 345 from XR to cover 387/1 on a limited number of peak hour services from Paddington to Maidenhead/Reading
8-car 315 to remain in service on TfL East replacing 7-car 345

Or have I got hold of the wrong end of the stick and these are all unconnected
