They were by area, however there was little meaning to most of them. It's something like:
A Flint
B Mold
C Chester
D Wrexham/Oswestry
E/G Wrexham
F Wirral
H Liverpool/Warringhton
J Runcorn
K Crewe
L Limited Stop
M Rhyl/Llandudno
N Bangor/Caernarvon
R Caernarvon/Porthmadog/Bleanau Ffestiniog
S Barmouth/Dolgellau/Aberystwyth
T Runcorn Busway
V Ex Vaggs Motors
X Express
Rhyl also had the P35 and P36. These were variants of the M35 and M36. I think there were a couple of other P routes at various times in parts of north Wales.

I think we have to be grateful to @shawmat for what has been made available to all here; it's great reference material, nobody else has done anything like it, and you increasing see it linked to from all sorts of places across the web.

You can go on about IT optimisation for ever - I've made a long term professional career out of it!! :)
I agree it's a great resource - if you read my earlier posts I'm hoping to help contribute to it when I'm able to. I'm sorry that I find it less easy to access than the average PDF, but I find it much harder to find timetables under the system the site uses.

Have you read this?
(User guide to timetable world)
I hadn't, but I don't think there's anything there I'd missed. The bookmarks take me to a too-zoomed out area, so I still have to fiddle around getting to a readable size.

I also worry that having its own format may make it harder to maintain as an archive.

I was wondering if it would *also* be possible to make it available in .pdf form for those who find this easier to access.

The July 2021 Release of Timetable World has just been completed.

A new feature this time is a map-based index to GB/IE Buses & Trams. The map shows the geographical proximity of various operators and uses colour to signify ownership. (The regular tree-like index is still available, and the Yorkshire and North West area menus have been restructured to deal with growing coverage.) https://timetableworld.com/gb-bus-map or click the image below.

@shawmat many thanks for this resource.

Particularly interested in rail timetables from around 1970-80 in the Southern Region, or around 1970-91 elsewhere - plus bus timetables from around 1970-91, if any of those are on the horizon (sadly I cannot contribute any myself)

Maybe a long shot but working books from about 1975-91 would also be very interesting.

many of the books are ones people already own. or have perhaps bought out of their own pocket to increase the coverage on TTW

I found the Microsoft Image Composite Editor on a download site called Softonic. Just had a quick play and scanned and stitched together this 1950s Devon General map of Torquay. Very easy to use.
Hi

May i share this map with the DEVON GENERAL FACE BOOK PAGE?

Wondering if the timetableworld guy would be interested in adding a new section to the site, a wiki-like system for contributing information about historic (train or bus) timetables?

This could still be interesting to people for periods where no-one has any old timetables they're willing to scan.

Something that would provide information such as (and this is a real example, the info below is more or less correct):

Alder Valley - Year 1984

Hindhead Depot

Services:

211 - Haslemere, High Lane to Woolmer Hill. Irregular, about every two hours. Leyland Nationals, interworked with route 212.

212/3 - Haslemere, High Lane to Alton via Liphook and Whitehill. Irregular, around every 90 minutes. 212 via Oakhanger, 213 via Kingsley. Most 213s only run Liphook-Alton. Interworked with 211; some short journeys interwork with the 268 at Whitehill. Mostly Nationals with VRs at College times.

etc.

The latest release of new bus/tram/trolley content took place over the weekend 26/27 March 2022, adding 82 new timetables and a similar quantity of GB and European railway timetables. There's a list at the bottom of this post.

I'm grateful to several contributors who have supplied timetable books and, in some cases, ready-made scans. If you haven't visited Timetable World recently, there have been two major changes.

Firstly, the website itself has been revamped to simplify the navigation and make it look more visually appealing. We took the opportunity to replace the timetable menus with a new grid-based search tool. With 1,200 objects on the site, it is better suited to a finding your way around a growing range.

Secondly, we've added a shop. All timetables remain free if you access them online, but we now support the purchase of downloadable PDFs for personal use, and you can purchase facsimile timetables via Amazon. The first 50 items are all railway timetables, but we'll add some of the rarer bus timetables shortly.

Timetable World News is an 8-page PDF that explains all this and more (follow the link), and it has many pictures to whet your appetite with.

The new stuff brings the total number of GB bus timetables and maps to 358. The latest additions are:

It really is a wonderful repository of information.

There is one that you've uploaded which is very interesting!

This is fantastic.

I dont suppose by any chance you could upload some National Express timetables from say the 1970s or early 1980s?

Some 60s Royal Blue / Associated Motorways would be doubly fantastic!

Matt only puts timetables on that people lend for scanning, I am afraid.

Agree that 1980s timetables, particularly pre-privatisation would be especially interesting (also the very end of the 70s) but obviously it depends on people donating timetables to timetableworld.

It depends on what we offered. The advantage to collectors of sharing via Timetable World is that we can do the scanning and the digitised timetable becomes a permanent archive object for others to enjoy.

We initially targeted late-1960s, as being the tail end of the Transport Holding Company - and whilst networks were still largely complete. PTEs for the 1970s have since been added. As you say, it depends on what we are offered. There is a lot of Yorkshire and Luton area thanks to three specific contributors, and East Anglia is looking good once we get through more scanning.

Agreed, more late 70s & early 80s timetables would be great if any are available load up ( i'd love to see complete BR GB passenger timetable books from the late 80s, early 90s too, if they are available to load up), although must remember some operators started binning area timetable books from the late 70s.

There is this site, mostly North West, & has some North Wales, timetables, maps, & more.

Thank you and that is exactly the point. There must be millions of documents held by collectors and heritage railways etc etc seen by so very few.

Sharing them in this way is simply the best thing to do.

Timetable World is now offering its UK bus timetable collection as downloadable PDF files. The collection has grown over the last three years to exceed 500 representative items from all regions and most eras. Each PDF has been OCR'd to make the text searchable.

A small charge is made for most of the PDFs (£2 - £8) but some are available for free download. The proceeds help to pay for the servers and electricity bills, with some left over (we hope) to buy more timetables.

We started offering railway timetables on this basis a year ago, and it has proved to be successful. So we have high hopes that bus timetables will also be popular. I, for one, will be using them to underpin posts in my local history group on Facebook about the services of yesteryear.

To whet your appetite, here's a nice graphic made up from the covers ...
