You wouldn't have time at Newport.

Have any photos appeared of things being broken up there? Curious as to how much they break them up before feeding them into the crusher.

I assume it's not overlooked by any publicly-accessible land, given the lack of photos of stock there.

There’s a small handful of pictures on the internet showing VEPs being broken up, and the process doesn’t appear any different from elsewhere - grabber rips the bodywork off and into a pile, underframe then cut up by hand using a flame torch.

The only place who seem to work differently is Booths, who seem to do more in the way of removing bits beforehand, and seem to do more of the bodywork cutting by hand.

Thanks for letting me know. I know they've been clearing out a lot of EMR stock recently as NL03 and NL04 have both been scrapped recently.
Shame that they've been scrapped but there's nowhere else for them to go, so scrapping them is/was inevitable.

Edit:
Saves me posting my own videos lol

Any chance of laying out the coach types in the first post so we have a clear idea of what's been saved?

40xxx - buffets (the third digit specifies which type)
41xxx - First-class coach
42xxx - standard class coach
44xxx - Trailer Guard Standard (standard class with guard's compartment - this will always back onto a power car when in use)
46xxx - composite first/standard class (GWR only)

Thanks for letting us know - since that's from Ely, rather than Gascoigne Woods, I'm thinking that's an old LNER set - am I correct?

Useful information, thanks - whilst I knew what was meant previously by the NL numbers categorized to the EMR fleet, I had no idea which coach was which when the number were posted.

I haven't seen anything, though based on the machinery they have there, I'd have assumed that it would have to be cut up before going into the shredders, due to the sheer size of the coaches. By what extent, I wouldn't have known.

You wouldn't have time at Newport.

I've heard that they dispose of train carriages quickly, but didn't know it was that quick!
Hopefully a couple of the ex-EMR MK3s make it to Booths instead, so that parts of the interior can be saved.

There’s only a run round loop and spur at the compound. Vehicles are typically broken up inside hours of arriving, I had a look today at some EMT MK3s that arrived, they appeared to be “fresh” from traffic as in all the seats etc where still in place no spares or recycling taking place before the breakers have a go at them.

I think there's still one ex EMR "blue" set at Gascoigne Wood so suspect that's that one.

Trying to think what's at Worksop that could go to Newport, other than mk4's which haven't been to Newport yet.. It's routed up the ECML to London which would be fine for mk4's, not sure about the rest of the route though..

Watching this thread with interest. Do love the HST and it's sad to see so much stock going but it is what it is. How much MK3 stock is there left sitting in storage at the moment? Get the impression the vast majority has gone now.

I have just joined this forum and have been checking my list to the one above regarding disposal of HST coaches at Sims Newport. There is one I saw going down there on a rake of coaches on 09/04/2020 which you don't have listed there its 42339. You may have a typo error or have missed it out

Just a gentle reminder that this thread is to discuss HST Coach disposals.

Other threads exist for the discussion of the disposal of other rolling stock types.

Thanks :)
