Hmm, no real place to put this, so General Discussion it is...

I'm not sure how long ago it actually was but the list of competitors for 2016 has now been released and for the first time it includes a manufacturer or rolling stock, rather than supply chain or contractor.

The full list this year being;

  • WMG, University of Warwick
  • TfL
  • University of Sheffield
  • University of Huddersfield
  • University of Birmingham
  • University of Southampton
  • Bombardier
  • SNC-Lavalin

It seems that TE Connectivity is not going to be taking part this year, replaced by Bombardier.

The competition is to design a 10.25" gauge locomotive to fulfil a number of challenges within a design specification, including regenerative braking.

Having a scope through the rules it also seems that, again, the energy efficiency challenge has been removed from the competition.

Either way, it seems it may be more interesting again with Bombardier now entering. For a bit more information before posting the link, this will be engineering and project management graduates engaged on the professional development scheme at Bombardier, the same as Transport for London and SNC-Lavalin (Formally known as Interfleet Technology).

For much more information than I'm willing to type you can see the IMechE pages here.

Having just noticed it's not on the page there, this competition has been running since 2012 and the former winners are;

2012 - Interfleet Technology Ltd.
2013 - University of Huddersfield
2014 - Transport for London (London Underground Ltd.)
2015 - Transport for London (London Underground Ltd.)
