The Austin that got "a jolly good thrashing" from Basil Fawlty was an Austin 1100, not an A40.

I think you are wrong. The Austin 1100 was on the ADO16 chassis which is a bigger version of the mini, that led to the development of that car, the allegro, the metro and the maxi. The Austin ADO16 was a 4 door saloon, the car in Fawltey Towers is a 2 door estate. The ADO16 Austin/Morris wasn't made in estate form. The car in the scene from Fawltey Towers, was definitely an Austin A40 Farina.

The Austin/Morris 1100/1300 you refer to were also badged as an MG, Wolsey, Riley, and Vanden Plas. The variations depended on spec, cubic capacity, and, carburettors. The Austin and Morris, only had a single carburettor. The MG had twin carbs. The Wolsey, Riley and Vanden Plas models had plush interiors with a higher output engine.

The Austin A40 was available as 2-door saloon and hatchback. Conventional rear wheel drive layout, like previous A40 models (signifying 40hp) but with radical (for a 1950s Austin) styling by Pininfarina, hence often known as the "Farina" A40.

The BMC 1100/1300 (ADO16) was also styled by Pininfarina, and was available in 2-door, 4-door and estate (Countryman), but was an Issigonis front wheel drive layout similar to the Mini, and much less boxy in looks.

The A40 hatchback and 1100 estate were both branded as "Countryman" - their Morris equivalents (1100 and Minor respectively) were "Travellers"

The Austin A40 ceased production in the early 1960s, the various varieties of Austin/Morris/etc 1100/1300 continued into the 1970s. There was indeed a two door estate model and that was the one driven by Basil. It's the "Gourmet Night episode from 1975 at which time the 1100/1300 range was still commonplace, whilst the A40 was becoming rare.

Austin Farina A40 was in production from 1958 - 1967, the ADO16 from 1963-1974. Fawlty's Mark 1 estate was quite rare, the estate version was not introduced until 1966, and the revised mark 2 range was launched in late 1967. Fawlty's car (WLG 142E) has an early 1967 registration.

In the second series made in 1979 they have apparently come up the world as they have an almost-new Austin Maxi OYF 747R - Sibyl is seen driving off in it in high dudgeon during the Wedding Anniversary episode
