Morning. Travelling to Interlaken next week and was wondering what's the crack about getting up to Grindelwald and Wengen on coupons? It is possible? Got the SBB, and private railway coupons. Thanks

I can help you with the Jungfrau line..you'll get a 50% discount with your FIP card (but it still came to £95 when I did it a few years back). If you do plan to go check the webcam in the hostel on Interlaken Ost to see if it's clear up the top.

The BOB, WAB and JB are not members of FIP so free coupons are not valid and there is no discount on an FIP card.

According to the Rail Staff travel site half fare is given on presentation of a letter of introduction. Presumably the letter is obtained from the Rail Staff Travel Office

Yes the Rail Staff Travel website is the place to look, but if you're going next week you may have missed the boat as they require more time to issue the letter of introduction. The staff at Interlaken or elsewhere on the BOB network are well used to dealing with UK rail staff though.

If you're planning to do several journeys on the metre gauge railways from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen/Wengen etc. perhaps the local Bernese Oberland regional pass would be convenient & worth considering; but this is Switzerland so it's not cheap, but possibly cheaper?

Switzerland is a killer financially - however the Interlaken Migros will keep you alive (does a fairly priced hot lunch) - still reeling at the £95 priv !

Thanks for all your tips everyone. Looks like I will have to fork out for the full fare. Oh well at least it's free to Interlaken from Geneva.

If you have the minor lines FIP free pass (I no longer do - being retired !) , then the RhB network is a magnificent option - though watch out for that costly buffet at St Moritz , -however when you get to Italy - your financial woes dissapear .......

OK, relax. Notwithstanding the RSTL position as relayed by Chief Planner, in practice on the ground the Jungfrau Bahn will offer half price fares if you have a FIP card but there is no freetravel with the SP coupon. They clearly see lots of FIP cards. There is a JB ticket office at Interlaken Ost station who are very helpful. There is also a Coop restaurant directly opposite which is good value but, as Chief Planner indicates, you may feel the need to make your own sandwiches etc. etc. when you get there....Gute Reise.
