Some lovely pictures Peter, it looks like it was such a lovely day as well. Just a quick question about Epsom to London: If you are going to London (doesn't matter about where), is it more convenient to go via Waterloo or Victoria?
Thank you, and it really depends on where in London you need to go. Some places are much easier than others if you use a specific terminus. For King's Cross I'll generally use either, but I favour Waterloo over Victoria because the walking route at Victoria is now such a long way round whereas from Waterloo you can of course just do the cross platform at Oxford Circus. If I'm not in a hurry I'll take the slightly slower way via Thameslink, either via London Bridge or via Sutton - it takes about the same time either way. It's a lot easier, albeit 10 - 15 minutes longer.

A good factor is the frequency; with SWR still only doing 30 minutes it's often faster to go the other way.

If I'm going to Paddington, the easiest way is Wimbledon and the Wimbleware service. Not much choice about that - but if SWR is up the creek, there's always via Victoria as a possibility that doesn't take much longer, although it's less easy.

Liverpool Street is obviously another via Thameslink routing, this time to Farringdon then the Circle.

I do also prefer riding on the 700s over the 455s and 377s...

27/08/22:

Another mission with a difference; assisting a friend in North Devon with painting a room. - and I decided to do it as a long day trip for convenience!

This meant the first train of the day from Epsom at 05.32, which was 455 869 + 455 914 to Wimbledon, sighting 66 035 at Raynes Park with a Tolworth freight, and 21327 + 21328 to Paddington. Fortunately no disruption, so it was 800 010 + 800 016 on an early one via the Berks and Hants to Exeter - but time, first, to photograph 33 025 on a charter rake and 57 603 with the Sleeper. An attempted photograph of the steamy thing at the other end of the charter rake, 45596, failed - I managed to blur it!!! Well... I've done that one before anyway, so... *shrugs*.

Acton Yard was fairly full with at least 66 028, 66 020, 66 188 and 66 096 present plus a few more playing hide and seek behind the rakes of wagons. Southall produced 66 115, Hayes and Harlington followed suit with 66 569 and Reading joined in with 66 749 while Theale wasn't to be left out of the party with 59 203. Westbury, of course, topped those with 70 817, 59 201, 66 610 and 66 621.

After a fast dash, arrival at Exeter was a couple of minutes early which was good because it meant the very tight +5 across the platform for Barnstaple was more than do-able; we had actually arrived before 158 956 did! Always a hairy connection because it's an hour's fester if it goes wrong.

Later the same day, after much activity a few miles away from the station with a paint roller and four walls now freshly covered with a new colour, my friend dropped me back at Barnstaple and the same unit arrived to convey me to Exeter on the return trip. From there is was 802 108 to Paddington, again via the Berks and Hants, and an interesting doubleheader sighted at Taunton was 66 543 + 66 518. Westbury had added 66 720 to the collection there and of interest at Reading depot was 950 001.

Between Reading and Paddington we overtook the steam charter again, but it was to terminate at Hayes and Harlington as it was running rather late after experiencing some kind of a problem so I didn't hang around at Paddington and made my way home with 21319 + 21320 to Wimbledon and 455 854 + 455 915 to Epsom.

The two balloons were photographed from the IETs, one on the way down in the morning and the other on the way back in the evening.

This was a combined track bash for the wife with a walk; she needed the north eastern parts of the Chiltern network and a moderate distance walk is available from Little Kimble to Wendover, so a plan was formulated.

Epsom to Waterloo on 455 703 + 455 902 and then mole mode with 3244 + 3458 put us on 168 003 from Marylebone to Aylesbury and after a short break for her to grab some coffee we continued on 168 002 to Aylesbury Vale Parkway and back. Next, we changed to 165 030 + 168 324 to Princes Risborough then returned a few minutes later on 165 015 to Little Kimble.

Following a relatively easy walk, apart from one very steep climb, we reached Wendover via the viewpoint at the Boer War memorial and caught 165 014 back to Marylebone and utilised 3237 + 3459 to make our way to Waterloo from where we returned to Epsom on board 455 715 + 455 871.

One nice surprise was seeing a 4½ litre 1930 Bentley at Little Kimble... a very fine motor.

Yes, that is Chequers in picture Sep 2022 009, seen from up the hills.

Mainly a shopping trip comprising of both getting some theatre tickets first and some food later on, but I did manage to squeeze in some haulage bashing as well...

First of all, great thanks to SWR's poor service which meant having to get 377 407 + 377 147 from Epsom and changing at Clapham Junction for 455 903 + 455 860 to get to Waterloo to access the theatres near Piccadilly Circus via 3250 + 3460. Anyway... tickets purchased, 674 + 650 took me onwards to King's Cross and 21365 + 21366 across to Liverpool Street where I caught double dud 720 574 + 720 562 out to Stratford, but not before getting photographic proof of 710 125 + 710 130 unusually gracing a high numbered platform.

I was at Stratford for long enough to see 66 587, 66 956 and tripleheader 66 529 + 90 013 + 90 015 before required 720 533 + 720 579 ( dud ) turned up; having bashed that I came straight out to Stratford again on 321 329 + 321 309 + 321 320 to await the next target. Prior to that, 66 502 and 66 708 passed through then it was the turn of required 720 512 + 720 540 ( dud ) to bring me back to London again.

Having gen, I knew there were no others available so I thought I might as well get on with the shopping and proceeded to Farringdon on 700 129 to East Croydon for a nifty connection onto 377 624 to Thornton Heath. After getting the food I had 377 471 + 377 110 to Balham for a short connection onto 377 609 + 377 703 back to Epsom.

Windsor was the target of this outing with the wife - she needed both branches for the track as well, which is fortunately quite easy to do. Starting with 455 864 + 455 715, we made our way to Waterloo to take 458 512 + 458 515 to Windsor and Eton Riverside; a short walk to Central followed, then a quick ride to Slough and back on 165 114 to get that track done before much walking around the town and a 45 minute long boat ride along the river for a short distance.

When it came to returning home, 455 867 + 455 853 took us from Riverside to Waterloo, during which journey I noted 701 035, 701 019 and 701 022 at Feltham. After reaching Waterloo we had a meal and walked to Blackfriars to catch 700 027 to Streatham to do a bit of shopping before using 700 033 to get to Sutton and 377 626 + 377 615 to finish the day to Epsom.

Starting with 377 604 + 377 625 from Epsom to London Bridge followed by 700 136 to Farringdon and 21507 + 21508 to Liverpool Street, I immediately dropped on required 720 576 which was ready to depart! I rode this as far as Tottenham Hale, did a few photos then travelled back on dud 720 105 with an awareness the the last LNER IET that I needed for a photo was at King's Cross... 21101 + 21102 swiftly got me there, 801 224 duly posed for my camera and I immediately headed back to Liverpool Street with 21031 + 21032.

Resuming, I was aware that there were no other required units out that day so I made my way back to Stratford with dud 720 530 and did a fairly long photographic session. I will not list everything involved as that would make for a rather boring list of a report and after a while I took dud pair 720 501 + 720 572 back to Liverpool Street, 21007 + 21008 to Farringdon and 700 003 to Streatham for more food shopping.

That done, it was 700 035 to Wimbledon for 455 732 + 455 734 back to Epsom. I would not normally go this way round, especially not with bags of shopping, as the connections to Epsom are not brilliant but at least Wimbledon has a lift - and on this occasion my hand was forced by a series of cancellations via Sutton.

Once again, a mainly photographic mission with only a single required unit known to be available. This time the day started with 377 617 + 377 613 from Epsom to London Bridge and 700 105 to Farringdon with 21035 + 21036 across. As expected, everything at Liverpool Street was dud so the first available out being 720 578 was "it" and my first target was to await the incoming required haulage, which was not too long... 720 555 + 720 547 ( the latter of course being dud ).

Having ridden this in to Liverpool Street, I found it was the next one out that was calling at Romford so I decided to stay on board to see if there was anything of interest in Ilford depot. There wasn't. From Romford the next available up fast was double dud 720 566 + 720 530, and this put me into position at Stratford for another load of photos.

Eventually things started coming back, so it was time to get double dud 720 589 + 720 557 to Liverpool Street and see about some more shopping ( it's an easy thing to do, which also saves the cost of coming out specially, to combine shopping trips with these London based trips ). That called for 21539 + 21540 to Farringdon and 700 117 to East Croydon for the connection to Thornton Heath on 377 702. After the shopping I found there were issues with Thameslink so the easiest way back was to ride 377 605 to London Bridge and then 377 608 + 377 708 from there to Epsom.

This was a visit to Sevenoaks with the wife followed by a short-ish walk in London along the river from Greenwich to Deptford. Our outward route was via Bat and Ball because she needed that short link for her atlas.

We began with 377 620 + 377 606 from Epsom to Sutton, then 700 049 to Blackfriars for 700 053 all the way to Sevenoaks. Having looked round the town, we caught 465 901 + 466 001 + 465 916 back to London Bridge, sighting paired 66 161 + 66 182 at Hither Green on the way, then caught 376 016 + 376 001 to Maze Hill.

Following our walk we boarded 376 034 + 376 010 at Deptford and returned home from London Bridge with 377 614 + 377 602.

I had a different target in mind for my camera on this occasion - somewhat fortuitously, as it has turned out with subsequent events!

Starting with 377 706 + 377 612 from Epsom, as usual to London Bridge, I had 700 152 forwards to Farringdon and then 21325 + 21326 to Euston Square for 350 126 + 350 251 off Euston. There was much to note at the Willesden / Wembley complex with 67 024, 66 952, 66 110, 66 517 + 66 510 and 66 514 all being present.

From Bletchley I took 230 003 to Aspley Guise, noting 730 011 + 730 001 and 730 005 in the depot, the latter I was able to photograph. Before long, 230 004 turned up for my return trip. Which meant I had two of them in the can, and the third hadn't been outside the depot... drat... but then, it came past with a crew training run to Bedford!! Well... curses... had I known that was running I'd have simply remained at Bletchley and would have got all three for pictures much quicker, As it was, I now had to wait for 230 005 to go all the way to Bedford and back again... at least it was running non stop...

While I was waiting at Bletchley, I did additionally get pictures of 66 565, 66 516, 66 619 and 66 533 and eventually was able to take 350 264 + 350 266 back to Euston ( adding sightings of 66 957, 66 523, 66 562 and 720 602 at Willesden / Wembley ) before getting 21511 + 21512 across to Liverpool Street for dud 720 533 out to Stratford; true to form a required unit sailed past in the opposite direction... a quick dash back on 345 019 sorted that out and I came back out of Liverpool Street on required 720 113 + 720 580 ( dud ).

Nothing else was apparent before I ran out of time, so double dud 720 529 + 720 569 to Liverpool Street, 21341 + 21342 to Farringdon and 700 149 to London Bridge put me on 377 605 + 377 611 back to Epsom.

Fantastic photos.
Thank you; I'm having a big effort to catch up this week!

Having reached the end of October, that's enough for today. Next I will get the new haulages and new sightings threads up to date ahead of the end of the year then do the November and December reports, which at least should be fairly straightforward ones. Ideally I'll be fully up to date by December 31st...

or King's Cross I'll generally use either, but I favour Waterloo over Victoria because the walking route at Victoria is now such a long way round whereas from Waterloo you can of course just do the cross platform at Oxford Circus.
Wouldn't Vauxhall be easier to reach Kings Cross from the Epsom direction (depending on how long for an SWR service). No need to worry about the Bakerloo having one of its usual 6/7 minute gaps.
Busy with that little red pen of yours with various trips

No, I've tried that before - the narrow staircases and the rather long walk across the road to the Underground with a frequently unfavourable crossing phase... I now avoid using Vauxhall to change either way between Epsom and King's Cross.

PS I use a black pen for my sightings and a letter notification, also in black, for my haulages... :)

There is a subway to avoid having to cross any sort of road at vauxhall.

When did they add that? Last time I tried to change there, the signs all just pointed over the crossing.

It's still easier to go via Waterloo, though.

14/11/22:

More haulages... setting out from Epsom on 377 706 + 377 624 to London Bridge with 700 133 to Farringdon and 21383 + 21384 across to Liverpool Street, I boarded double dud 720 531 + 720 563 to Stratford and of course the usual happened, necessitating an immediate return on another double dud, 720 564 + 720 532, to pursue a required pair consisting of 720 109 + 720 588 back out; not long after that required 720 115 + 720 106 ( dud ) brought me back in to London again.

At this point I obtained gen on what else was out and I realised I had time to get the newly opened connecting Crossrail tracks in, so back out to Strafird on dud 720 570 then 345 021 from Stratford to Bond Street and 345 003 from there to Ealing Broadway polished off that requirement. Acton Yard, incidentally, contained 66 004, 66 021, 66 060 and 66 096.

I now had to swiftly return across London to intercept my next haulage so I was straight on to 346 066 from Ealing Broadway to Paddington ( low level ) and then 345 059 through to Stratford. My original plan had been to intercept at Stratford, but the late running of a service calling at Romford, knowing my target was also calling there, allowed a change of pl;an to reduce the fester time...

Dashing across, I managed to board double dud 720 531 + 720 563 to Romford, noting no change in the Ilford residents ( still 08 588 and 08 700 ), then strolled round to the up fast platform to await required 720 111 + 720 570 ( dud and also the one I'd used earlier to position myself for the track bashing ). The wait was a bit longer than expected, though, as up services were being delayed by a signal failure at Shenfield!

However, I had a good margin of time and was still able to easily make the other available unit at Liverpool Street, required 720 582 + 720 520 ( dud ) to Tottenham Hale. This, incidentally, brought me right up to date with all commissioned 720s now bashed. At the time of writing, though, four more are now in service... Anyway, the first available back from there was obviously dud, 720 589, and after arrival at Liverpool Street I made my way to Farringdon on 21309 + 21310 then 700 053 to Streatham ( yes, more shopping! ) before ending the day with 700 060 from there to Sutton and 377 101 + 377 449 onwards to Epsom.

In the pictures below, the sunset was taken near Hackney Downs and the misty skyscrapers near Bethnal Green - both from on board 720 589.

21/11/22:

The plan today was to photograph 484s on the Isle of Wight, although the weather was not particularly brilliant... anyhow, I set out from Epsom on 455 713 + 455 719 for Waterloo and just managed, by less than 30 seconds, to catch 444 033 on a Portsmouth fast. Wimbledon was playing host to 701 017 on this date, while 701 028 was noted at Clapham Junction and 66 541 at Woking.

My plan had been to get off at Southsea and connect via the hovercraft, but looking online the weather was such that it was not running and ticket acceptance was in place on the FastCat, so I remained on board to Portsmouth Harbour and made my way across to Ryde in a ten foot swell and high winds. As the Black Knight would have said: "...'t'is but a millpond!!" Given the horizontal rain it is just as well that a replacement minibus shuttle operates along the pier while the engineering works are carried out...

I was expecting to get at least three of the fleet and that proved correct. One in service and two outside at the depot. It was 484 003 which was the service unit and with a one train service there was no percentage gained by only going part way, so I did the whole line to Shanklin and back, 484 001 and 484 005 being the units parked outside at Ryde St John's Road.

One more FastCat trip and I was back at Portsmouth Harbour just in time to get 450 057 + 450 104 to Waterloo fast after which, with more shopping in mind, I walked across to Waterloo East, rode 375 801 + 375 602 + 375 630 down to London Bridge, 700 055 up to Blackfriars and then 700 017 to Streatham. After the food had been purchased, it was a simple matter of 700 027 to Sutton and 377 708 + 377 703 to complete the trip to Epsom.

Additional photos for 21/11/22:

There are only two trips to report on for December; I will do this probably on the 1st or 2nd January once I extract the December photos from the camera.

Upon getting up, I checked RTT to see if one of the two other 484s was the one in service on this date, and it was... so that was my target decided. With no shopping to worry about either, I could use the cheaper way from Epsom direct via Guildford as well, although that's high risk with the reduced hourly service via Bookham in place...

I started off with 455 725 + 455 728 on this route and changed to 450 005 + 450 124 at Guildford which took me through to Poprtsmouth and Southsea low level. A short hop on the hoverbus connection later and I found myself at Southsea hoverport; this time there was a flat calm so the more fun way over was operating.

As expected, 484 002 turned up and given that I'd have to go past the depot anyway to see if the fifth example was outside, I did a full run to Shanklin and back again. That fifth example, 484 004, was indeed outside at St John's Road, so I had all five units photographed after just two missions out of a possible maximum of three; that's a textbook operation...

Having hovered back over I was just in time to catch 450 001 + 450 047 + 450 059 back to Guildford and fortunately I had the half hour which made a connection with the via Bookham, so there was no long fester at Guildford. It was 455 858 + 455 860 which would get me back to Epsom.

Lovely as ever Peter. And what great weather for December! Hopefully it wasn't too cold. The 484s look like nice units as well, the conversion seems to have been done to a good standard as well. What was happening at Ryde Pier Head, are you aware? :)

Today it would be my wife's turn to scratch off the whole of the "Lizard" and then we would do a walk from Deptford to London Bridge via the Thames Path after dark with the intention of photographing the skyscrapers.

We set out from Epsom on 377 105 + 377 443 to London Bridge, then took 700 110 to Farringdon and 21091 + 21092 to Liverpool Street then positioned ourselves with double dud 720 571 + 720 586 to Stratford.

After that it was a straightforward track bash... 345 030 from Stratford to Bond Street, 345 038 from there to Ealing Broadway and 345 060 from there through to Abbey Wood. Acton Yard contained 66 169, 66 113 and 66 051 plus a few more that were hidden. Abbey Wood to Deptford was with 376 022 + 376 032.

Following our walk, during which we obtained a lot of nocturnal photos as planned, the return to Epsom was direct from London Bridge on board the same two units we had started out on.

It's a several months long refurbishment of the railway part of the pier. There's a thread on the forum somewhere about it.

The day wasn't particularly cold, no - this was the Friday and the cold snap didn't start until the Monday and Tuesday.
