Hi everyone, hope you are doing well

To make the most of being able to buy child discounted tickets I have embarked on a 1st class all line rover for the next two weeks, starting today. I plan to write up a trip report at the end of each day if you are interested talking about my experiences of food, service and the places I go. Reccomendations of place to go/things to do would be greatly appreciated. I hope to also attatch photos that I take as well.

I write this whilst on 1D09 10:03 London Kings Cross to Leeds having just had a pleasent full english breakfast and a hot chocolate. Staff are attentive and friendly both on board and in the lounge. We were held at Peterborough for a person to be escorted by police off the train, with a view from the window of the situation.

I hope you find the reports to be informative and enjoyable

Matt

Sadly I don't have enough time right now to recommend things, I'll try to get back to you later though :) Have a beast of a time, you never forget your first ALR!

Have you got a rough idea of what you’re going to do each day or are you making it up as you go along? Also, your location says London. Do this mean that you intend just doing day trips there and back to London each day as this will limit how far you can go.

He won’t be able to stay in hotels on his own if a child, so this limits things greatly. (Unless he’s with an adult)

If the above is the case, maybe do some circular journeys.

London-Leeds-Carlisle-London
London-Edinburgh-London

Try get the Welsh loco hauled and TP 68’s in too if you’re into loco hauled.

Cumbrian Coast is also decent but maybe not the best use of a 1st class ticket. And also, I love the rural Scottish journeys so if you can get to Aberdeen or Inverness then absolutely do that!

i live on the South WCML which gives me easy access to Milton Keynes or Euston for onward journies. I do have a rough plan but it will likely change slightly each due to Avanti's usual issues with supplying a basic service.

I have a night in Leeds and 2 nights in Glasgow which will help to diversify where I can go. I don't mind early mornings or late evenings which makes it possible to travel further in a day.

If you’re in Glasgow then the West Highland Line is a must if you can make it work. But again, it’s not the best use of a first class ticket. Then I’d say try do Glasgow-Inverness-Aberdeen-Glasgow on the other day, should be a scenic circuit.

Plenty of food for thought for you anyhow.

Are you more into the scenery or trains themselves?

I think a mix of both would be good. I know that many of the stations on the HML offer good views whilst also having a fairly frequent service. I primarily photograph and i'm not too picky so if it moves I would likely take a picture of it. Somewhere like Berwick I think would be a good idea

I hope next year to be able to do this again but in standard class utilisling the sleepers to their full. Taking the sleeper up to Fort William would make it a lot easier to visit

Yes, that’s sensible; the 156’s aren’t comfortable for such a long journey, but they do have the advantage of running during daylight to enjoy the scenery.

As long as there are no more strikes I should be getting to Fort William at the end of the month myself, one way on Scotrail and the other by Sleeper.

Have a good time, you thinking of travelling in the seats or a berth?

We’ve got a berth, the seats don’t get good reviews at all and I’m hoping for some sleep and some refreshments in the lounge car as we are climbing Ben Nevis the same day :)

One constraint there is the weekday time restriction on Avanti services from those two stations particularly if you want to head north as well as benefit from the full breakfast they offer.

A trip on GWR from London to at least past Dawlish is worthwhile and, if time permits over the bridge to Cornwall. Maybe go on XC on the return up to Birmingham and return south from there.

One other suggestion is making reservations where possible. Many trains are busy even in 1st. I found that very useful last time I was using an ALR back in May.

It is an annoying restriction but can be slightly overcome through the use of avanti services at Rugby and LNWR via the Trent Valley

This is in the plan with the hope of getting the sleeper back from Penzance

Friday 5th August -

I started my day on the 07:47 London Northwestern Railway service from Tring to London Euston formed of 3x 350 units (350 120 + 350 253 + 350 236). I had the 1st class section in 350 236 all to myself apart from one fellow passenger boarding at Watford and disembarking at Harrow. We arrived a few minutes late into platform 2 at London Euston where my first journey ended.

My next booked train left from Kings Cross just down the road at 10:03, hauled by 91 106 in VTEC livery. Knowing I had time to spare I decided to pay a visit to the 1st class lounge. I was greeted by friendly staff and sat down at a table with a bottle of water. I found that the snack offerings were substandard, consisting of packets of shortbread or crisps, not food I usually associate with breakfast.

The inbound working arrived some 25 minutes late due to a safety inspection near Grantham. A quick visit to the top of the platform for a photo was needed before boarding. Despite the late arrival of the inbound service we only departed a minute late. Food and drink was offered promptly after departure, with the choice of various juices, hot drinks and water. Being one of LNER ‘Dine’ trains meant that I was choosing from the only menu that actually deserves to be called 1st class. They have massively reduced the 1st class offering after covid hit with no desire to return. A full English breakfast used to be available on almost every morning service out of Kings Cross, now it's just a handful. As you can guess I went for the LNER full English which I found to be alright, not the best breakfast but satisfactory. Multiple drink services were offered but I don’t think any more food orders were taken so not sure if you would receive a meal if you boarded at any intermediate stops. We arrived at Peterborough on time but ended up leaving 12 minutes late due to police removing a passenger refusing to pay for a ticket, making for an interesting view out of the carriage window.

Upon arrival at Leeds, I made my way over to platform 15, awaiting the 12:42 TPE service to Newcastle, taking me as far as Northallerton. This was a class 802 operated service (802 204) a 1st for me. People give the 80x series a hard time but in my opinion they are perfectly adequate for the job. I think that you have to remember that most people will not care about individual details that enthusiasts spot and instead primarily care about if it gets them from A to B or if it runs on time/at all. I found the seats to be incredibly comfy with good legroom, charging ports and a generous amount of recline. Despite having an onboard host I did not receive any refreshments for the 40+ minute journey which I found a little disappointing.

A 25 minute spotting session at Northallerton was had before heading back on myself to York. The 12:50 TPE service from Northallerton was formed of 2x class 185 units (185 142 + 185 118) however I made the mistake of boarding the rear half of the train meaning there was no onboard host. It was nice however having the 1st class section to myself.

Upon arrival at York I made my way to check out the new lounge. I was greeted upon entry and took a seat after grabbing some refreshments. The lounge was quiet and I made myself comfortable. I didn’t stay long as I left to go have a look at TPE’s 68s having seen one arriving from Scarborough. They appear very impressive from the outside but will have a better judgement once I travel on one (hopefully in a few days time).
From York I took another TPE 802(802 212) to Chester-le-Street with the goal of seeing Colas 70 814 hauling an oil train from Jarrow to Lindsey, a new route for Colas having taken over from DB Cargo at the start of July. A much better service was provided on this journey suggesting I was just unlucky before. A 50 minute wait was needed for the train to terminate at Newcastle before heading back to pick me up again and take me to Manchester Victoria.

Upon attempting to exit the barriers, my ticket despite having a QR code would not scan, forcing me to ask a member of staff for assistance. This was one of the 3rd party ticket inspectors and based on the look on his face and how long he looked at my ticket I don’t think he had seen one of these before. I then took the tram from Victoria to Piccadilly via a change at Market Street, sadly not included in the ticket price.

Having seen that Avanti had struck again and cancelled both the 20:15 and the 21:15 I headed promptly to the 19:55 service for London Euston operated by an unrefurbished pendolino (390 135). Very quiet in first class and was left a little confused when the guard said it might be standard premium or might be 1st? How does it work with the changes, especially considering the headrests say 1st class? Thankfully he said that he would keep it first class for me. It appears to be a regular occurrence as another passenger asked me what class this coach was.

Food was served as we left Crewe, the ham and cheese croque monsieur was very good and quite filling too! First class was then declassified as the last 2 trains from Manchester to London were cancelled making our service the last of the night, hence it ran full and standing.

Upon arrival at Milton Keynes Central I changed for a LNWR service to head home

Thank you for the update.
Best wishes on your travels and please keep us updated on this thread!
I'm thinking of doing another 1st ALR (all line rover).. thing is, I spend months planning then something happens.. better just getting out there and see what happens with some sort of 'game' plan in mind.

Glad you are enjoying the updates, I know what you mean I spent ages planning only to change my mind. Thankfully the ticket being flexible really helps with that.

An interesting first day and I’m glad you rate the 802’s, I’m hoping to sample one later in the month

Sad that many 1st class offerings seem to be watered down or non-existent currently based on your report.

Sounds like an interesting day for you yesterday. Regarding ticket barriers, whether I had the familiar credit card sized ticket with the magnetic strip or the latest paper ones with the QR code, none have ever worked any barrier I’ve encountered anywhere when having an ALR. I find most gateline staff will just take your word if you show them the ticket and say that it’s a Rover and it doesn’t work the barriers but, very occasionally, you get one who insists you insert it.

By the way, if your ALR is printed on paper, treat it with care. I had one last year and found that by day 10 some of the print was fading badly and the QR code would no longer scan for onboard ticket checks

I had a Scotrail Gateline Guy earlier this year at Glasgow Central who, despite me showing him the ticket and adding several times "These never ever work in Gates", was insistent I try it! I did and as it came back at Me rejected I added "See. I Told you so" (Not in an overly nasty way I hasten to add!)
The look on his face as he opened up the Side Gate for Me was quite something!!

Indeed, I came across an Avanti guy at Rugby back in May who despite me telling him a couple of times that the ticket wouldn't open the gates, insisted I put it in so he could read the code that would show on the screen

Hi everyone, Im on a TPE service from Liverpool to Leeds and had my ticket inspected. She asked where I was going and then scribbled '68.22' in big characters on it. What does that mean? She just walked off afterwards

Seeing as the date is 6/8/22 today, I assume that would be it. Why it was done though I have no idea.

Just spoke to the guard and she said she wrote the date on the ticket. I wasn't sure why she would do this as it valid for another 12 days but the way she described it I think she thought it was a one day ticket, a very expensive one day ticket

That’s bad, in my opinion. I try to protect an ALR against that sort of thing. on the rare occasion when I’ve seen a conductor or whoever go to mark one I speak up and ask them not to as it’s a Rover. I became vigilant on this when many years ago a Scotrail sleeper attendant marked one with a biro.

do you think if I asked nicely at the ticket office they would reprint it or should I just suck it up and leave it?

i asked about having my faded ALR reprinted at the station where I’d bought it and was told it wasn’t possible.
