I‘ve seen elsewhere that this was at Rock Ferry?

No, 508118 was stored at Birkenhead North station siding at the time of the attack.

There was a second act of arson later in the year at Rock Ferry involving 507023 and 508130. I remember 508130 being stored for months at New Brighton following this, during which time its paint discoloured badly.

I take it this was the reason why units haven’t been stabled there for years.

Does anybody have a photo of 508118 after the arson attack?

I doubt that was the reason as they continued to use it. Within a few weeks of the 508118 attack a different stored unit had taken its place in the siding. I think it was 508110 but not sure, while 508108 was the undamaged other unit in the siding, closest to the buffer stop.

Of note today, 508140 has been adorned with a 'face mask' at each end. She was working with 507030 on West Kirby services today.

I was on 508120 and 140 yesterday and never noticed the masks. Shows how much notice I take...

Something I've wondered was when the Class 508 were to return to Merseyside, after being in the South, was the original plan to send them back as four car units? Obviously they ended up donating a carriage to a class 455

The 33 class x 507, & 43 x class 508, was originaly an order for 76 x 3 car sets for merseyrail. But meseyrail (MPTE I think) could only afford 30 sets, 507001 to 507030, later extended to an additional 3 sets, 507031 to 507033. the remaining 43 sets of equipment was stored in Hull. Eventualy another home was found for this, but the southern only wanted 4 car sets. When it was realised that merseyrail would take on the 508 units, it was always planned that a trailer would be removed for use elsewhere. The trailers were taken out at Strawberry Hill depot in West London.

103 looks to be broke OOU since the 18th of August. 104 is on Liverpool Kirkby jobs and 136 is on Southports

Correct, 30 September 1991 to be exact. I'd searched for that date for a while but there was only the year quoted on the net so I visited the local library and finally found it in Rail magazine. I then added it to Wikipedia which has a description of the incident also.

The 507004 and 507022 Kirkdale collision was definitely during 1991. I have the exact date somewhere but can't find it at present.

Up to 47 507's must have been planned at some time, and 58 508's, they're listed in a 1970's RCTS stockbook, inc the car numbers. The 507's car numbers went up to where the 315's start (64400-64404 & 64438-64460 & 71375-71388 never got used in the end) and the 508's were also listed up to car number 64764/trailer 71598, although these did get re-used in 465's & 317's

I was told 5 units to be done, but no details whether they have or not
508131 and 508143 joining 508120 and 508140 with the mask livery at the front and back ends of the units.
Not spotted the final unit which has this modification yet, if it has even been done yet?

I wonder why all 508s have been chosen? I take it that this was a random unit choice for the mask stickers whilst said units were undergoing maintenance?

Possibly because the 508s are going for scrap relatively soon and some 507s aren't so they might have had to remove the masks if the Covid requirements go away in a while.

And 508123 is the remaining unit to receive the face masks livery modification.

All five of the masked units will be fairly low on mileage based on when they were last overhauled, so it isn't exactly a random choice. They will be amongst the first to leave once the new trains finally enter service.

I assume it's partly to save removing the mask before they go for scrap.

I would assume the plan is for all 508s to go for scrap first as none of the 507s are amongst the five mask wearing units. I could be wrong of course.

However the 507s are maintenance-wise in a much better position than the 508s. That’s not to say they aren’t being looked after.

Cheers thanks for clearing that up

Are Merseyrail still running the Covid timetable with pairs out all day or have they returned to a near normal timetable using singles off peak?

All the northern line is back to usual 15 min timetable, with some peak services strengthened to 6 car as usual.

As for the Wirral, this will remain as the 30 min Covid timetable due to social distancing requirements of train crew at the Wirral depot, making it not possible to resume a 15 min service frequency.
All Wirral lines (apart from Ellesmere port line and one circuit on the West Kirby during daytime off peak) are formed of 6 cars during the day.
New Brighton and West Kirby (apart from one on West Kirby) revert to 3 car in the evening.
