I for one am very fond of 507/8 it's very old school no computers, I take it the power surge is too much for the sub station ? There's sub station upgrade works I believe in readiness for the 777, the interesting thing is, once 777 is put into regular service alongside 507/8, could the differing power demands affect the sub stations ?

Very true. Folk thought they were brand new when they underwent the major refurbishments in 2003 - 2005.

My sister certainly thought they were. She was quite surprised when I said they were older than her, her response was "I thought they got new ones while I was at uni". Quite possibly the most comprehensive refurbishment on the whole network, because it replaced all of the interior panelling, removing basically all the obviously-1970s features. The SWR 455 (and ex-508 vehicle) refurb was *almost* as good, but 1970s/80s features were retained inside so they were obvioiusly not new.

I'd say a 230 looks more 30 odd years old than a Merseyrail 507/508 does.

Definitely. I’m yet to see another refurbishment that makes a 40+ local commuter unit look fairly brand new and just as good as the refurbishment of these units.

I had a little tour of the network on Saturday afternoon in between various walks and below is a quick update of what was about.

In service on the Northern Line: 507001, 507002, 507004, 507005, 507008, 507011, 507013, 507014, 507015, 507020, 507024, 507027, 507031, 508103, 508108, 508112, 508115, 508124, 508125, 508127, 508128, 508138, 508141.
In service on the Wirral Line: 507003, 507012, 507025, 507026, 507032, 507033, 508111, 508114, 508117, 508122, 508126, 508130, 508131, 508137, 508139.

Stabled units
At Southport: 507007 (Southport siding no. 10) and 507018 (Birkdale siding no. 1).
At Kirkdale Depot: 507006 and 507021 were the only numbers I could see. Both are still in full public view and damaged 507006 is in the siding closest to Kirkdale station. A masked unit was in the back sidings; 508140 is my guess as it looked fairly clean.
At New Brighton: 507016 (siding no. 1), 507023 (wall siding), 507029 and 508123 (both siding no. 2).
At West Kirby: 508120 (siding no. 1).
At Hooton: 507009 (platform 1).

That leaves 507010, 507017, 507019, 507028, 507030, 508104, 508136 and 508143 (or possibly 508140) unseen. 507019 had spent a period stabled at New Brighton alongside 507016 (I saw it there last Thursday). I haven't seen 507010 in ages now. Several of those out of service are having their remaining mileage managed as they approach their next overhaul.

I hope the above is of interest to a few out there.

Good to see 108 back out, presume she’s had an overhaul?

Was the 508 sandwiched between the 777s? If so, it will have been 508140. :)

A nice summary of the units operating on the network.
508136 was recently overhauled (before 508108) at the start of this year. I think 508104 is next in for overhaul.
Does anyone know what is the situation with 507010, I have also not seen this operating on the network recently or seen any captures of this unit?

Being the second unit on the train involved in the collision at Kirkby, did 507021 pass inspection to allow a return to use or is it still out of service?

508130 did the additional Hooton (2H61) then ECS to Rock Ferry
Thanks for the info :D

also forgot to mention 507009 and 507012 went over to Kirkdale last night after completing New Brighton and west Kirkby services respectively so will probably be out on the Northern Line today.

I imagine that RAIB will want to go over it with a fine-toothed comb before it's released for scrapping.

I'd think it depend. Once they've done a download of the OTDR and some preliminary investigation, they'll be able to determine if it was a train fault or not - if it wasn't a train fault (and there's no particular case to investigate with the crash performance of the train) then there'd be no reason for them to hang on to it

I am not to sure to be honest. I have only ever seen it on Kirkdale depot since the incident. But I have not been passed Kirkdale for the past 2 weeks now.
There has been no mention elsewhere that 021 is back in service. Anyone else could confirm?
