507033 is on the Southport line today and will be again tomorrow if you need it.

Thanks for that, but my plan is to go over to Bidston. but that could now change. It's my last 507/8 for traction that are still with us. So I Would like to get it.

IIRC Same compressor as a 507, different to a 508 which has two.
The 508s have the old school Southern region compressors. The 315 do too. Whereas the 313s, 314s and 507s have compressors that sound similar to those on a class 319. Did they have them from new or were they fitted later?

Anyone seen 507013 recently, not seen for a while during my travels, any ideas? Thanks

As a child I was always fascinated by why some made one noise and others a different noise. I preferred the 508 “noise” and despite them all looking the same quickly correlated that it was the ones with the blanked out passenger access buttons that made the better noise.

I am sure I have read that at the time this design of unit was in production, the new compressors as fitted to 313/4 and 507 units could only work with a maximum of 3 carriages. As the 508s were originally 4 Car they had to use the old style compressors. As they were fairly quickly reduced to 3 cars to donate to some 455s it produced the oddity of them having the old compressors despite running As 3 cars. 315s were always 4-car hence them having them as well

i believe the youngest units to be fitted with the old style compressors were the 455s As I have heard them in use on these units (and what a shock it was too! I thought the 508/315 were the last running around with the “classic” ones) .I’ve never been on a 317 to say what type they use but the lookalike Scot rail 318s, with 3 cars, have the new style compressors.

without wanting to sound too odd, that old style compressor noise is embedded in my head I think! Talk about childhood memories, I still always try to sit near one!

best wishes

Anyone seen 507013 recently, not seen for a while during my travels, any ideas? Thanks

Anyone know what 507033 is booked to work tomorrow (1/5/21) it's my last one for traction and if I can I'd like to clear it off tomorrow.

A nice summary of the units operating on the network.
508136 was recently overhauled (before 508108) at the start of this year. I think 508104 is next in for overhaul.
Does anyone know what is the situation with 507010, I have also not seen this operating on the network recently or seen any captures of this unit?
508104 was outside Birkenhead North Depot yesterday on new bogies.

I think its on the Southport-Hunts Cross line today, from this capture. As for what diagram its on, I am not too sure.

Thanks for the reply but unfortunate it was a bit late for me as I'd spent over 1 1/2 hours at Sandhills in the morning and then moved over to get to Bidston to go to Neston.
So I could have missed it by ten minutes.
When I got the message I was on Lime Street getting ready for my trip back home that takes a good 2 1/2 hours.

Had a nice afternoon today (well, yesterday, 02/05) chasing 507001 and 507002 which were working together on the Southport line. These two units carried the Queen and other VIPs aboard the Merseyrail network's official opening special back in 1978. 507001 and 507002's diagram finished at Southport so they should be together tomorrow as well.

I'd like to think this a nod to the 50th anniversary of the Merseyrail brand tomorrow and if so, what a lovely touch. Of course, it may just be coincidence.

I also had a nice run around on merseyrail yesterday and saw 507001 and 2 on my local Southport line.
Also got to New Brighton and West Kirby where I took this photo of a 507 and 508 next to each other.

Looking at these, there's a very prominent dark square below the solebar next to the coupler on the driver's side on each unit. I don't remember noticing these before, although looking back the units seem to have had them for a while. But looking further back, the 508s didn't have them in their early SR days, nor the 508/2s on SE. And the 507s don't appear to have had them when delivered either. Anyone know what they're for - anything to to with signalling / train control on the Merseyrail network?

If you mean the big black square on the non drivers side, it's the cab air con equipment which was added at somepoint in the last 10 years. If I remember rightly the class 313s on Great Northern were fitted with similar.

Thanks - that's what I was referring to. And yes, driver's side - my bad! Prompts the question whether there's room behind the valance on a 769 to install something similar - though one for another thread, perhaps!

Thank you for providing this update. Good to see 508104 back out fresh from overhaul!
Was that 507023 with the fault or 023 was the unit that replaced the faulty unit?

Great to see 507003 back in service after its fiery contretemps. It is working with 508111 on the Southport line today.

Can someone please advise if the trains are singles or pairs? I gather on weekdays pairs only work on Northern at peak times. So do pairs work Wirral and Northern weekends? I assume this won't change 17 May if timetable remains the same.

The Northern Line's Southport - Hunts Cross trains are 6 cars at weekends but all other services are 3 car.

OK thanks very much so I can expect a few pairs next Sunday.

That's right. There should be five pairs on the Southport line on Sunday and a total of 26 units in service (15 Northern Line and 11 Wirral Line).

Excellent. Many thanks for that now I know how many I need to view before I know I have seen the lot for the day.
