Does the Network Rail HST ever run at 125mph? Also is any of the the other departmental stock wired to operate with the HST?

The two Mark 2 vehicles that ran in the NMT when it was first introduced (977974 and 999550 from memory) had suitable wiring. Presumably the "normal" test trains operated with 43050/060 recently have also been wired in some way?

The loco-hauled PLPR test trains used with Colas 43045/50/60 have through wiring for multiple working between class 43 power cars. No electrical supply is taken from the power cars, that’s handled by generators within the set.

Being able to run at 125mph and keep up with traffic on the fastest main lines is very much the point of the NMT! Albeit it’s restricted to 110mph for much of the WCML, as it doesn’t tilt.

I heard rumours Network Rail were to add more power cars/HST sets permanently, or have those plans been scrapped?

Colas Rail have leased three ex-EMR VP185-engined power cars to replace class 37s on the PLPR trains (formed of Mk1/Mk2 stock), but the future of that plan depends on them retaining the contract to operate infrastructure monitoring trains which is up for grabs this year. AIUI the plan is/was for seven power cars to be acquired which would then totally displace the 37s from PLPR work.

Two, 43045 replaced 43050. Afaik the plan was to trial the two and if succesful then aquire more cars, I think it was around 14 though?

14 would be far more than would ever be required for the four PLPR trains, even allowing for maintenance, particularly as (so I understand) the 67s would be staying and 73/9s would still be used for the Southern Region and Merseyrail. To the best of my knowledge there are no plans to use the 43s on the ultrasonic trains, which given their 30mph recording speed wouldn’t be particularly suited to class 43 haulage.

There’s not 14 VP185 power cars available! Out of the 24, 5 with LSL, 5 with DATS and 3 125 Group, leaving 11.

Yes, I remember discussing that with a mutual friend of ours at the time! I'm certain it was quite a few VPs they were after though.

Seven is the number I’ve heard, directly from a number of Colas IM staff. It makes sense, enough to cover three of the four PLPR trains (with the fourth either running with 73/9s or on maintenance), plus one power car spare. Eight or nine could still be plausible, but not anything more than that.
