This viaduct, originally only two tracks wide, led from the Miles Platting area to the Manchester and Leeds railway station at Oldham Road. Does anyone know when this viaduct was widened to four track in width and also it appears to have a much widened area adjoining it at the top end of New Allen Street which had stonework retaining walls. Can anyone give information what that area was used for? If it is of help, the area in question is nothing to do with the railway works that were the precursor of Horwich works. That was on the other side of the viaduct.

The viaduct was still intact about 15 years ago when I visited the area and it looked like the original viaduct had stonework arches and the widened section looked like a brickwork construction. Most of the viaduct is now demolished.
