TTNs Temporary Timetable Notices issued to commence Monday 6 July removing Night Tube services “until further notice” on Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly.

Services last operated on morning of Sunday 15 March 2020
So they could be reinstated before the 31 March 2021?

They could be reinstated at any time, but the date in mind is 31 March 2021. In this instance 'until further notice' is more likely to mean a date after that, not before.

So what happened to all the night tube drivers ? Are they on day duties or furloughed ?

Many of them took up a secondment to work ordinary duties. Those that wanted to stay on nights have stayed on nights.

And are doing what?
On most lines they already had drivers working night duties 7 nights a week before Night Tube services commenced. As part of the main roster, these depots already have night shifts on Sundays to Thursdays for the regular full time drivers.

The main reason for this is that duties cannot start before 04.45 (although I’m told that some depots by agreement can have duties starting at 04.37) or finish after 01.30. During winter periods they will be operating empty trains overnight to keep the rails clear of snow and ice. There’s also the danger of a late night stock move being required, or any other form of service disruption, that would require someone late at night to move a train for tomorrow’s service.

It’s also worth noting that since Night Tube was suspended, start of traffic on Sunday mornings has been brought forward on the Night Tube line sections to more closely match the Mon - Sat times.

In simple terms, first trains on Saturdays and Sundays and last trains on Fridays and Saturdays are operated by night tube drivers. There’s very little ‘down time’ between these and drivers may be required to operate trains anyway. The full complement isn’t required, but a handful are.

(For example, the last trains, even during ‘normal’ Night Tube times, on the Northern line via Bank, which doesn’t have an overnight service, were crewed by Night Tube operators.)

not on all lines as not all lines had night tube drivers

Given that this thread is about Night Tube, and the question asked was about what Night Tube drivers were doing, it seemed fairly obvious that that would go without saying.

If it isn’t... lines without Night Tube still retain ‘traditional’ night shifts on Friday and Saturday nights and some of these will also crew first/last trains.

Cue the Fagin line from "oliver" ... "We're assessing the situation" .... the until further notice, really means until further notice. I've heard no hint of a definite date for Night Tube resumption. I think it will be kept under constant review. Bare in mind though, say the country gets the vaccine to the whole population and social distancing is no longer required and things are "back to normal", there will still be a backlog of training new drivers for the main day service. This is the "hole" that some Night Tube drivers and station staff are filling. So until LU are caught up on training - both for day shift and Night Tube itself - they wouldn't be able to re-start Night-Tube.

I'm not sure that anyone 'on the inside' has expected anything different from day one.

Notably, Piccadilly line Working Timetable 59, introduced from May 2021, does not contain any Night Tube section.

Until the details of the TfL funding package are available it’s safe to say all bets are off. Night Tube is not hugely profitable, after all.

I’d place a small wager on it not coming back. It’s a noose round the neck, and a quick win both in making some savings, and allowing the staff to help contribute to filling 2020’s recruitment / training vacuum (assuming the staff are prepared to change contracts of course, but I’d imagine most would be only too pleased).

The only thing which could save it is if there’s a clamour to support a kick-started London night-time economy. But given how much BJ cares about Labour-voting London, I wouldn’t be holding my breath.

NEW: Underground staff have been told the night tube won’t be back by the Spring. Drivers seconded to day tube to fill shifts. LU: “...could take us many months to get back to the numbers needed to restart Night Tube.”

Night Tube won’t start running again until 2022, TfL boss Andy Byford reveals
Transport Commissioner Andy Byford told the Standard that the Friday and Saturday through the night services on the Victoria, Jubilee, Central, Northern and Piccadilly lines will be the last to return to normal after the pandemic.
He said: ”We need the personnel to keep the day services going and frankly there isn’t the demand for it, so there are no immediate plans to restore the Night Tube within a year, and certainly not before 2022.

“Securing the whole network is more important than keeping the night tube going.”
