Hi,

Does anyone know of any sources of information about this Line? Really looking for pictures of Bellshill NBR station but any info on the branch would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

I take it you have looked at RailScot? User Bittern on here done a bit of digging on the line in question too. He created a thread or two a while ago with some pictures, may be worth a search.

I didn't do much on the Coatbridge section, I'm afraid but I've done countless work of the "main line" from Shettleston - Bothwell - Hamilton. I do have a wee map like thing around somewhere. Gimme a wee while and I'll see if it's still here.

I did a bit on my website - see http://www.jhowie.force9.co.uk/monkland.htm

Edit - here is a link to a large scale map of the station http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maptiles/m101098_272857_660338.png

The station is where the present day Cochrane Street is situated, absolutely nothing of the route can be discerned except the bridge that is used today to take the southbound slip road under the "old" road into Bellshill onto the Bellshill Bypass just south of the Shawhead interchange, and a short stretch of embankment beyond that.

There's still a part of the old route you can follow.

Rockburn park in Bellshill follows the line of the track bed down to where the maternity used to be. There was an embankment I remember when I was a teenager that went past the hospital. It had a sandstone face of stones that must have been all that was left of a bridge.

It would have met up with the bridge on the Coatbridge bound dual carriageway

There was a branch line which ran to Hattonrigg pit which is now a path in the park until it reaches North road.

What id really like is some pictures of this station, or even the Caledonian Station in the steam days but haven't found any as of yet. There's a picture on wiki of the caley station before it was electrified but that's all.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

Have you looked on the RCAHMS Site?http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/161090/details/bellshill+station/

There are also a couple of books that you could buy, or obtain through your local library

"Central Scotland’s Last Days of Steam" (WAC Smith)
"Lanarkshire’s Lost Railways" (Gordon Stansfield ) Both published by Stenlake Publications http://www.stenlake.co.uk/books/category.php?section=Railway
