I'm just wondering what North Wales coast services Manchester-Llandudno via Warrington are 175's these days.

Also, don't forget the M-F 0850 off Manchester Piccadilly, which is usually 2x158 to Chester, the front portion then going fast to Holyhead, and the rear unit stopping to Llandudno, forming the 1144 return.

In my experience, the Llandudno portion is usually the first to be a 150 when there's a shortage of serviceable 158s.

Today's 1450 Manchester-Llandudno was a single 150 (229) today, and presumably the rest of the diagram.
It was full and standing to at least Flint.
The conductor raised a smile by saying "sorry for the small train, but at least it has been freshly painted".
I have not come across a newly refurbished 150 like this one.
It had seats similar to ATW's 158s, with a few real tables (as well as the seat back type), and the external DB logos.
Not a bad refit at all. Northern should take note.

Watched a depressing charade at Helsby.
We rolled in 5 late at 1546 after being delayed by a couple of Pendolinos at Winwick Jn.
Just as the 1548 Northern service to Ellesmere Port pulled out, 2 minutes early (check on RTT).
The Helsby-Ellesmere Port "service" hasn't much reason to exist, but one of them is surely to connect with Manchester trains.
It was of course the last westbound service of the day, so any prospective connecting passengers would need to go via Chester and Hooton to reach Ellesmere Port (if they were quick enough to stay abord the ATW service).
Pretty shabby customer care by Northern.

Are ATW short of available 175s at the moment as I noticed a 158 in Piccadilly on a evening South Wales diagram last week

Nothing unusual. 1 x 175 missing from a 175 diagram on an odd day is nothing unusual or worth worrying about. There can be 101 reasons for a substitution. These questions could be easier answered if you were to say what train and on what day.

If it was the 2235 MAN-SHR or the 2017 CDF-MAN it's booked for a 158. Otherwise they do pop up from time to time covering for 175s, especially if the North Wales loco hauled is unavailable, as has been the case quite a lot lately. Despite the lower top speed, they can keep to time, they provide more seats than a 2 car 175 and the seat numbers have been designed so that reservations will work across either unit so it's not too big of an issue when it happens.

Slightly unrelated point but is the 2017 Cardiff to Manchester booked for a 150+158? On the last three occasions I've seen it it has been. Thought maybe the first time was a one-off.

Booked for a 158 on its own but is quite common to have something else tagged on if an extra unit is needed in the north for whatever reason. Often the extra unit is removed at Shrewsbury.

A similar situation exists with the 21:17 CDF-CTR, booked single 175/1, and the 21:55 CDF-CRE, booked single 150. Both trains often have extra units attached if they're needed up north the next day.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but the 07.12 from Chester to Pic is 2 x 158 and the return is split at Chester with the front running fast to LLJ the HHD and the rear all stations to Llandudno.

The units are from Shrewsbury (front) and HHD (rear for the 07.12.

Already mentioned in bits and pieces on this and ATW 158 threads.

The similar reason for seeing a 150 attached to 06 19 Shrewsbury to Maesteg. If one has problems up North, remember they are away for 4 days, and has to be got back to Canton for attention it means sending a replacement up and getting the original back home for attention. There is, of course, limited means for moving due to almost everything 175 worked.
